I would love to see a reboot of either series.

The books have been republished recently with minor rewritten updates, changing videotapes to DVDs and things like that. I haven't read those, but I think that's good enough. I don't think a full reboot would be anything necessary yet... unless it's to fix the ending.

It annoys me when they do that because I when I go back and read them I'm like "When did this happen?" And kids are smart enough to understand that technology used to be different than today and these books are older.

yes, i would love a reboot of Animorphs.

Animorphs holy shit!!! Why haven't they made a tv show out of that yet??
I'd watch and fandom the shit out of that.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a TV show. It was horrifyingly bad.

Why haven't they made a tv show out of that yet??

I've always thought the nature of the morphing process makes Animorphs (which I, too, loved as a kid) incompatible with a film medium. So much of the tension of the book's plots was tied to the morphing process and how much time it took. It was an extremely important part of the plot that morphing took a couple of minutes to complete, because the characters had to strategize around that. There was that constant negotiation between their need for a particular morph and the time it would take to do it. But you couldn't really have the morphs take more than a few seconds in film, because it would slow the pace right down and eat up a huge amount of the episodes running time. If it was something that was only going to happen a couple of times, they could do some cutting back and forth between things happening in various places, so that you didn't have to be watching the characters morph the whole time. But because morphing was such a staple of almost every action sequence, I think the whole rigmarole of "Okay, they're starting to morph, let's see what's happening elsewhere shall we? And now we're back and they're almost finished morphing" would get repetitive really quickly.

Why reboot them, though? When I was a kid, I read books written before my grandparents were born. It was a glimpse into a previous era. Why is it important to you to update things for the smartphone generation?

Maybe to resurrect the fandom and experience a whole bunch of new fanworks?

Oh come on, seriously? I feel like you're going to wave a cane at me next and go "get off my lawn nonnie!"

Reading the secret I believe a "reboot" more just means something new within the universe, a new book series, movie, TV series, webisodes, whatever. But yeah, some of the painfully 90's "duuuude tubular" kind of stuff could be subtly changed so that it doesn't feel so dated if they want a new generation of audience to enjoy it.

Unless my memories of those books are exaggerated, they didn't need to be any darker and more serious than they were...the writing style was simplistic and kid-friendly, sure, but the actual content...shit, I still don't know how they got all of the crap in those books past the radar for the audience they were aimed at, starting with the David arc.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, The Animorphs series was...I wanna say magnificently dark. (I loved it, obviously.) Especially all the Chronicles books. Those were always my faves, because they weren't just dark in a good-guys-get-hurt-and-die way, they also delved pretty deep into some relatively complex subject matter, in terms of inter-species relations and whatnot.

The writing style could be pretty schlocky (all those onomatopoeic sound effects!), but the actual content was actually fairly heavy and mature.

Yeah, they don't need to make them darker. Especially the later books.

I just died and went to heaven. An Animorphs secret! I freakin' love The Animorphs! It's a great series that deals with real issues regarding the cost of war. It gets pretty dark, especially for a kids book. I still enjoy it now as a twenty-something, too. There's also a lot of humorous stuff in it as well. If a reboot was done, I wouldn't mind, because at least more attention would be paid to such a great series. I'd only wish the reboot would still be set in the 90's and that the Animorphs were older, around high school age, to allow even more topics to be explored.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I still enjoy the series too! Actually I have a re-read planned soon, I ended up splurging and buying myself the entire series in paperback because it's just not the same on an e-reader.

Semi related:

Honestly I'd kill for them to explore a Marco/Ax thing in a reboot. Even before I grew up and realized I myself wasn't exactly straight, or what that even meant, I always felt like Marco and Ax had a...something going on. What's even weirder is a lot of it seemed to be from Marco's side too. If I'm remembering correctly at one point Ax is in school with them, and he's creating a scene by being inquisitive and he's attracting the attention of some of the yeerk controlled teachers, so Marco gets the bright idea to yank Ax down onto his own lap and pretend they're just sitting and eating normally, like apparently this is what teenage boys do with one another.

Yes! An animorph's reboot please!

Omg Animorphs. I think it would make a good animated show. Or anything really.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds pretty sweet actually.

I bet kids these days would love it. Who wouldn't want to imagine themselves with shapeshifting powers?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Everworld! OMG, I would love a tv series SO much. I'd be keen for an Animorphs reboot too.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
The secret!OP is right, Everworld is really, really underrated. Not that many people remember it, even people who are TOTAL Animorphs freaks. The worldbuilding and aged up characters in Everworld are great. It had all the sexual innuendo, gore, and mature subject matters that Animorphs couldn't do more than allude to. Plus, K.A. Applegate did the whole "mythology mashup" like ten years before it became popular, which I think is super cool. Not to mention I love how obscure she got with it too. Not too many teens in the late 90's/early 2000's knew about Mayan gods and stuff.

I've never seen/read the other one, but I would definitely love a reboot of Animorphs

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, yes. More Animorphs is just what I need right now.

Maybe if this happens, I can lay off the Animorphs-AU fics that I always start writing. xD

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Animorphs as a kid, but hated the ending. It always struck me as incredibly bleak - maybe that's appropriate, but I remember being deeply upset by the lack of resolution and the Bolivian Army Ending.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so upset when Cassie and Jake broke up. Like. Man. It bummed me out.
