It'll die when the fandoms from which it sprang die off. (Like Teen Wolf/Supernatural/etc. Once shows like that end/are cancelled and the fandom dies, you'll see interest in that particular kink decline.)

IDK, I'm still finding BDSM universes based on a Stargate Atlantis fic written way back when. It hops from fandom to fandom. If those fandoms die (I don't see SPN going anywhere anytime soon), but it's already spread to the next 'big thing' it may go on forever. And it hits a lot of the 'big' fandom kinks: Sex pollen/aliens made them do it, D/s, strict bottom/top dynamics (or messing with them), mpreg...

I don't think A/B/O is going anywhere. It combines a lot of enduring, popular kinks into one big trope. It allows people to have all their kinks in one, without them needing to explain what they're doing.

I'm trying to imagine what it would have been like to write a knotting fic when the Omegaverse didn't exist. It would have seemed very odd, I'm sure, and most readers would have been completely baffled about why one of the dudes had a weird inflatable bulge on his dong. Plus, I think it would have felt pretty embarrassing and vulnerable to just write that with no prior context, like, "Yeah, so I have this kink where I like imagining the top's cock just getting bigger and bigger and blowing up like a balloon inside the bottom, and it feels really amazing, until eventually they're locked together coming for like five minutes straight." And in your head (as well as, possibly, reality) everyone thinks you're the weirdest and most ridiculous perv they're ever encountered. Like, wtf, are you twelve? Cocks don't work that way. And anyway, that just sounds silly and kinda gross.

But the Omegaverse names it, and provides a context for it, and as it turns out, a lot of people have a kink for cocks that swell up like a balloon at the base and lock the characters together. So now it's a valid kink, along with lubricating arses, heats, and whatever else you want to lump in there. It's accepted. Nobody has to explain it or feel like they're stupid for getting off on it. It's just the Omegaverse.

In fact, one of the things I like best about the Omegaverse is that it's so flexible that if you have any other weird (usually biology/body based) kinks that you don't know how to explain, you can usually just insert them into your own interpretation of the Omegaverse and people will usually take it pretty much in stride. Like I read an Omegaverse fic that had Alphas going into musth, like elephants do. Before Omegaverse came along it would have been pretty weird, but in the context of the Omegaverse it's just like, oh, okay, musth, that's cool.
