Please, just stop.

I hate wherever this appears in fandom and it’s somehow become ‘the norm.’ I could be in the most obscure corner of fandom and there's bound to be someone jumping on the bandwagon and making guys have periods and pissing on each other in heat and KNOTTING...as if I need all that shit in my life.

I don't know how/why it's become so popular but I don't want it. Ever.

Other people will like things you don't like. You just gotta learn to deal with it OP. Likewise, you probably have some things you enjoy that others are sick of.

After a scathing February 13th rebuke by the Queen of fandom, thousands of former A/B/O kink writers have come to the realization that they had been on the wrong side of history all this time.

"I couldn't believe I had been so blind," said knottingrules95, professional internet commenter. "Everything she said was true. Guys having periods? Being in heat? KNOTTING? It was awful and horrible. We need to return to good old-fashioned fanfic values."

When questioned about her next fic, she said she planned to write "some wholesome dub-con hurt/comfort whump, maybe with some sex pollen and aliens made them do it." Said fic reportedly features BBC Sherlock and Tachibana Makoto, but as biological brothers, in order to give it that traditional incest kick.

"We've gone too far," agreed RealCocksMatter, drabbler, formerly known as LubricatedButtholes. "We're trying to go back to our roots. Non-con, RPS, gore, torture - the vanilla stuff. None of this newfangled A/B/O."

The Queen could not be reached for comment, but has been quoted as saying she did not "need all that shit in [her] life."

I know everyone and their mother hates the phrase 'don't like don't read' but.... Never in my life have I wandered into A/B/O fic by accident. And I'm in SPN fandom. It is always very thoroughly warned for, especially now that the fans finally caught on to the fact that there are major gender and consent issues at play. You should be able to avoid it pretty easily.

Also, except for knotting, the rest of what you mentioned is pretty rare. I am genuinely curious about what fic you've been reading where men have periods, because it's always bugged me when fic goes 'And they can have a baby! But they don't have to deal with any of the gross icky blood stuff like ladies because they don't have vaginas' and I'm like 'if they don't have periods then their womb, magic or not, is not self-cleaning and they're probably infertile.

What fandom are you in where this is "the norm". Like...1-2 fics is not really the norm. Even in fandoms where is sort of justifiable (Teen Wolf) A/B/O fics are not the majority. In TW the tag for ABO is only like 1300 out of 71000 fics.

And what the heck is your fandom that the norm for ABO fic includes guys missing periods or peeing on each other? I've seen more fics that involve watersports without ABO than with.

Ehh YKINMK, anon. Though I do get where you're coming from. I was checking out somebody's ao3 profile the other day and the most recent fic they'd written was about some kind of AU where (tw underage ... something) Castiel was a cop who saved underage Dean from some captive situation, and Dean kept trying to seduce Castiel into breastfeeding from him. It was completely serious and I felt like I'd wandered onto another planet.

Fandom has always embraced the plot devices (tropes) that allow two characters to skip any development and hop straight into bed together. ABO is just the latest most popular one.

I laugh at the notion that this is crowding INTO YOUR LIFE from its abundant but very avoidable place on the internet.

Darling anon, have you heard of ao3 savior? I haven't seen an A/B/O fic in months, even when I go reading through the massive fandoms where it's more common.

It doesn't work on mobile if you're browsing from your phone/tablet/other non-computer device, but add "-A/B/O*" (sans quotes) to the filter box and it'll only show you results that don't have that string anywhere in it. That one does work on mobile.

You're welcome. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen the period thing, I'm not interesting in the pissing thing (although I don't see it often anyway) and I'm not too fond of the mpreg aspect that's in a lot of omegaverse AUs, but I think knotting is hot as fuck, ngl. sorry, OP. it's not like it's hard to filter out omegaverse fics though; I've almost never seen one that isn't tagged in some way that makes it clear that it involves a/b/o dynamics

Look, I myself am extremely squicked by the A/B/O concept and would probably be happy if it went away for good, but demanding that people stop writing something you don't personally want to see is pretty dickish.

Hear, hear!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in a few fandoms where it does pop up a lot and i tend to dislike it too, but I have to agree with the others and say: just try to ignore it?

The biggest thing that bothers me about this whole thing is when I come across a fic that has an interesting summary/premise, but then I notice it's omegaverse, and I'm like, why?! This story sounds like it could work perfectly well without it! I've skipped several stories like that and it bums me out.

I can understand the annoyance of seeing fic for a kink or setting you don't care for everywhere, but ultimately, eh. No one's forcing me to read them so it only mildly bugs me sometimes(and even then it's rare that one of my fandoms is flooded with nothing but A/B/O).

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And if the internet had been around when fandom was starting, I'm sure you would have been complaining about Pon Farr fic. The fact is, the same tropes keep popping up with different names, and it's okay if you don't like them. And you won't like the next version of it that comes along, and that's fine too.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I will agree that A/B/O is squicky to me and I've never gotten into it, but this is as a person who prefers little to no porn in her fanfic reading material, so I am clearly a planet away from being the target audience here. It's a shame cause some aspects of the setting are actually interesting to me, but they're never done in a way that makes me want to read it. C'est la vie.

(And I will pretty much never be into human characters who go into heat. Or non-human characters, for that matter, depending on if it actually makes sense for the species. I have even seen heat-related headcanons for Sans and Papyrus from Undertale, WHYYY.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I just always feel a little sad because a/b/o sounds like it would hit a whole bunch of my kinks. I really love heat/sex pollen/aphrodisiac stuff, and pregnancy stuff, and D/s, but somehow all the fics I've tried end up a KFC Bowl of Sadness instead of a delicious kink jambalaya.

Oh man, this is the most serious case of dl;dr I have seen in about ten years.

So what if some people enjoy it? I personally don't, but I'm not flustered because I just don't click on that.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I am just so, SO glad that this isn't popular in my fandom at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I just read about this recently. I think I posted in the wrong section by accident a few days ago or something, but I don't really get how it applies to anything outside of the furry fandom. People just get horny, sometimes people with good chemistry get horny at the same time, I don't get why they need to be in 'heat' or whatever to induce sex.

I've only found one fandom (and in there, one pairing) where the concept became really interesting to me (it was Pacific Rim, war + drifting + A/B/O = so many possibilities).

So of course that was the one pairing that had like a grand total of 2 A/B/O fanfics...
