I know everyone and their mother hates the phrase 'don't like don't read' but.... Never in my life have I wandered into A/B/O fic by accident. And I'm in SPN fandom. It is always very thoroughly warned for, especially now that the fans finally caught on to the fact that there are major gender and consent issues at play. You should be able to avoid it pretty easily.

Also, except for knotting, the rest of what you mentioned is pretty rare. I am genuinely curious about what fic you've been reading where men have periods, because it's always bugged me when fic goes 'And they can have a baby! But they don't have to deal with any of the gross icky blood stuff like ladies because they don't have vaginas' and I'm like 'if they don't have periods then their womb, magic or not, is not self-cleaning and they're probably infertile.

Exactly, it isn't that hard to filter out and I can't fathom a fandom where it shows up a lot.

I've seen fandoms where it's a lot more common than some other kinks, but those tend to be fandoms that are obscenely huge to begin with. Like, there's no shortage of ABO in SPN fandom, but there's no shortage of the fandom itself so it's natural there'd be more ABO.

+1 to everything else you said. Just wanted to point out that I 100% approve of not having periods in fics. They cause me enough pain, I don't want to read about on my downtime too. ;)

Ooh, I'm torn there. My own period grosses me out and is awful, but I just spend the whole time going 'no. You aren't fertile.' And while I don't think mpreg is inherently sexist in and of itself, I've definitely read some mPreg that basically reads as 'ewww women and periods grosssss.'

AYRT True, I've definitely seen my fair share of misogynistic mpreg fics. Though generally those fics I'll back button the hell out of anyway. Why do people have to make with the misogyny?

I'll keep reading if I'm desperate (Like if the pairing is really rare or I'm really desperate for baby fic) but ultimately I've found that fics that are filled with misogyny are also not well written. For completely unrelated reasons. I think a big part of it, though, is that slash fandom is predominantly women, and a large subset of that is girls between 15 and, say, 22. There's a lot of self-hate and sexism among teenage girls, probably because they tend to internalize things they are taught. In my teen years I bought into quite a few stereotypes about teenage girls, despite being a teenage girl myself. And I was in anime slash fandom, which is even worse.

I read a lot in spn and one of my fav writers writes a bit of mpreg. I keep on wishing they'd write more XD

I read mpreg because I love kidfic, but I've found that most of it is a bit not good. What's the pairing? I'd love a link if you have one.

The first a/b/o fic I read was by accident and I had no fucking clue why Tintin was in heat and needed Haddock's cock so badly. In hindsight, it was mild a/b/o, no knotting as far as I remember. I was so confused by why Tintin seemed biologically lust-sick for a specific man, though. This was when a/b/o was just starting to spread from the Supernatural fandom, and it was another year or so before I'd even realized that what I had read had been a/b/o.

That would confuse the hell out of me for sure. (Tintin? Seriously???) But I think the ABO fandom is really changing. For example, they acknowledge the fucked up gender dynamics in most of the fics I see now when they used to be dismissed in favor of YAY SEX.

Yeah same here.

Like there is definitely a fair share of A/B/O in some of my fandoms but they're appropriately tagged so I've never clicked on one by accident.

Untagged modern AU's are what I stumble on by accident tbh(and it doesn't bug me that much, I just back-click out or sometimes I give it a read out of curiosity).

Every once in a while you find that one fic that isn't tagged, but you can often see it coming because people who don't tag tend to be either visably new, or completely unaware of what they're writing. (Looking at you, anime fandom and your lack of understanding of consent)

Yeah, I've seen untagged AUs but I can often pick them out by the summary, and I enjoy AU.

Everyone is really good at tagging their stuff.

I mean, if I clicked on a link for, say, casefic set in Season 1 and got surprise!knotting I'd be annoyed, but I've literally never seen that happen.

Which makes sense, because writers who write a/b/o want to attract readers who are fans of the stuff, not readers who like me who just want to read about two emotionally constipated brothers hunting monsters.

Yes exactly! Part of the draw of writing A/B/O has to be the ready-made audience (I know for me, if I'm really into something I will read absolute crap if it has that something). And I think a lot of fandom is really latching on to things like trigger warnings and kink warnings, nobody wants to be dragged through the mud because they didn't label properly.
