I think genderswaps could be useful, but most of the time, they're not. In the Transformers fandom, there was a long standing super popular kink meme fill that was 'all the autobots are wake up and they're girls!!!!' And it basically turns into a celebration of misogyny, turning the sexual harassment of the newly female autobots by the still male decepticons into a joke and totally buying into this 'boys just can't help being horndogs' bullshit. That's not transformative, interrogating gender or anything. That is playing straight and uncritically what the modern conceptions of gender are. It was not empowering, it was not critical, it was totally buying into every ridiculous offensive stereotype of both genders.

OH and the fact that genderswap really just reinforces the extremes of binary gender? Social justice FAIL.
