The kind of people that think "genderswaps are pointless" are usually the kind of boring people that never want to think critically or expansively about characters or setting.

I love thinking critically and expansively about characters and setting but I still don't see genderswaps as having much of a point, but that may be because I'm agender and don't see a point to it in my own life as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-15 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
its just a fun exercise, especially in art, because you get to draw the person differently than they're usually portrayed, and also examine how they would behave or how their dynamics with other characters would shift based on the swap

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's really the point most of the time, but more importantly, what's the image from

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, what I meant to ask is: which companion is the one on the far left? Is that supposed to be Donna?

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-02-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I am wondering the same thing.

I agree in general, though only when it's done well. Which it often isn't.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck off, Steven. I know you've been fired from the show, but do you really need to stop by a secrets comm to force your perverted fetish down our throats?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, well, ignoring everything else here, is genderswapping even really a Moffat thing?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you watched any of his run at all? He is big into it. Especially the last season and a half when he's been shoving more and more of it on screen to try and appease the more radical of the alleged fanbase (and in doing so he lost all the core viewers too).

For a second I was wondering what Ron Weasley was doing there, before realising that it had to be Donna.

/Nothing else to add

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But like... it looks nothing like Donna, right?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-13 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What clued me in was the outfit. Nothing else reminds me of her except knowing that she's a redhead.

I just wanted to say I freaking love that genderswapped Rose in this pic.

The way girl!Rose's whole makeup/hair stylings have been adapted to a male hair/facial hair styling that telegraphs the same things about class, culture, personality, etc? Perfect! I gotta look up the original post for this fanart.

It is pretty cool!

I hate genderswaps when it turns M/M or F/F ships into F/M, unless a character can specifically change gender, like Ranma or angels from Supernatural, or they have official genderbent versions (ala Osomatsu-san). But even then I don't like reading it. :p I do like it if it's art and not on fics, but again, not if it's something shippy and it's F/M.

As for the reverse (F/M turning into M/M or F/F), eh. I guess it would be the same, but I don't have that many F/M ships that I care about so it's kinda a moot point for me.

I like genderswaps that turn a same sex pairing to M/F just long enough for them to realize their attracted to that person, and then they switch back to their original forms and it's like 'oh shit, i'm still attracted to them even tho they're the same sex as me now.' Like it brings out feelings that were always there just repressed. That's how I roll. It's my kryptonite.

Oh yeah, temporary genderswaps. Those are pretty fun, so I'm fine with that. And also, I'd be okay with the pairing getting reincarnated to different genders, or meeting parallel versions, as long as the endgame is still M/M or F/F.

Oh, Ranma...

I just wish I could find any Ranma/Ryoga fics that didn't end up with Ranma deciding to permanently stay as a woman for Ryoga-chan.

(I have never found a fic that wasn't creepy about it. If they were writing Ranma as a transwoman, who identifies as female no matter what her body looks like and decides to use the curse to be herself, it would be one thing. But no. It is always male!Identifing Ranma deciding randomly to stay in the female body to be a good wife. And that's when there's no creepy mindcontrol involved)

Sadly, it seems like genderswapping is a thing of the past. Now trans headcanons seem to be the rage, and I hate it.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
-_- Forget Martha, then, aye artist? At least have her drop in with Captain Jack. Dr. Martin Jones and Captain Jacqueline Harkness. With occasional appearances from Michelle Smith. If we're genderswapping here.

I think genderswaps could be useful, but most of the time, they're not. In the Transformers fandom, there was a long standing super popular kink meme fill that was 'all the autobots are wake up and they're girls!!!!' And it basically turns into a celebration of misogyny, turning the sexual harassment of the newly female autobots by the still male decepticons into a joke and totally buying into this 'boys just can't help being horndogs' bullshit. That's not transformative, interrogating gender or anything. That is playing straight and uncritically what the modern conceptions of gender are. It was not empowering, it was not critical, it was totally buying into every ridiculous offensive stereotype of both genders.

OH and the fact that genderswap really just reinforces the extremes of binary gender? Social justice FAIL.
