Aldnoah Zero (anime)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
trying to be spoiler-free but maybe vague spoilers in second paragraph

Anyone else watch it? I watched the first season on Netflix recently and enjoyed it quite a bit for a standard sci-fi mecha. The plot is nothing special and the mechas are a bit silly (especially the Aldnoah ones) but I liked most of the characters. Besides the boring Princess, anyway.

I'm on season 2 now because I didn't want to wait two weeks for Netflix to get the next season. I'm torn between liking the general direction it's going (with the two lead guys being against each other) and thinking it's a bit exasperating (princesses, need I say more?) But Slaine is my fav, I don't care what he does he's my baby no regrets. The other main dude (Inaho?) is boring and OP'd but I like that he's a space cadet in both meanings of the phrase, lol

I watched this as it was airing and all my opinions were basically the same as yours. Have you seen the fandom at all? Just asking because the last portion of the series really fucked up according to a lot of people (including me) and oh man, some of the fandom is still angry. I don't want to spoil too much, but I just thought I'd warn you.

Glad to find someone else who watched it!

I don't think comments have collapsed yet so I'll try to keep avoiding spoilers. But no, I haven't even looked for fandom yet, figured I'd wait until I finished it (assuming it finished after season 2? I have no idea).

I am kind of dreading where it's going because I don't have a lot of faith in the plot writing. But I actually like quite a few of the characters and the characters I dislike are generally limited to the Princesses, both for their personalities (if you can call it that) and their awkward plot device roles. But I sort of am enjoying the dynamic between Inaho and Slaine, but it's tentative because I don't want them to be shoehorned into Good and Evil dynamics (mainly because I think Slaine is probably still a good guy, besides continuing the war he didn't start he seems to be trying to shake up the status quo for the better - and Inaho hasn't really proven to me he's a good guy even if he's nice, he just seems like he does this because he has nothing better to do, sooo yeah). Still, with Inaho being the lead protagonist, kind of worried this will go the typical shounen route.

I'm excited to be angry though. :P Hopefully that means something unexpected happens, for better or worse.

Yeah, season 2 is the end. The studio has released some supplemental stuff that's post-ending (some short audio dramas, I think? and general info through interviews) and there are tie-in novels and manga, but I haven't looked at them much.

I actually ended up liking Lemrina a lot; I think she was the one thing about the show that got much better when everything else got worse. Inaho and Asseylum both suffer very badly from "tell-don't-show" heroism, IMO. Anyway, if you're excited to be angry, you'll fit into the fandom well -- er, on Tumblr, anyway. I don't know much about other places, other than that they don't like Slaine very much (the opposite of Tumblr).

Anon, I just finished it! D: Man, Slaine really was the series' punching bag like, the entire time. I still had trouble seeing him as a bad guy, more like, he saw war as inevitable and actively took the role of an anti-hero to do the things no one else would do, so the Vers empire could be remade without so much corruption and eventually there could be peace, which the princess could rule over. If he hadn't, someone else would've, and he knew that, and he doesn't trust anyone else to not betray the princess. Seriously though, he never caught a break, at least he didn't die at the end but it still kinda sucked. Confused as to why people would hate him, he was built up very well and the series made it clear how much his life sucked before this all happened. And Inaho didn't develop AT ALL.

I had to say I laughed and liked the princess a little more though when she randomly married some other guy who just entered the series like an episode ago, friendzoning both Inaho and Slaine, that was probably my favorite.
