Aldnoah Zero (anime)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
trying to be spoiler-free but maybe vague spoilers in second paragraph

Anyone else watch it? I watched the first season on Netflix recently and enjoyed it quite a bit for a standard sci-fi mecha. The plot is nothing special and the mechas are a bit silly (especially the Aldnoah ones) but I liked most of the characters. Besides the boring Princess, anyway.

I'm on season 2 now because I didn't want to wait two weeks for Netflix to get the next season. I'm torn between liking the general direction it's going (with the two lead guys being against each other) and thinking it's a bit exasperating (princesses, need I say more?) But Slaine is my fav, I don't care what he does he's my baby no regrets. The other main dude (Inaho?) is boring and OP'd but I like that he's a space cadet in both meanings of the phrase, lol

I watched this as it was airing and all my opinions were basically the same as yours. Have you seen the fandom at all? Just asking because the last portion of the series really fucked up according to a lot of people (including me) and oh man, some of the fandom is still angry. I don't want to spoil too much, but I just thought I'd warn you.

Glad to find someone else who watched it!

I don't think comments have collapsed yet so I'll try to keep avoiding spoilers. But no, I haven't even looked for fandom yet, figured I'd wait until I finished it (assuming it finished after season 2? I have no idea).

I am kind of dreading where it's going because I don't have a lot of faith in the plot writing. But I actually like quite a few of the characters and the characters I dislike are generally limited to the Princesses, both for their personalities (if you can call it that) and their awkward plot device roles. But I sort of am enjoying the dynamic between Inaho and Slaine, but it's tentative because I don't want them to be shoehorned into Good and Evil dynamics (mainly because I think Slaine is probably still a good guy, besides continuing the war he didn't start he seems to be trying to shake up the status quo for the better - and Inaho hasn't really proven to me he's a good guy even if he's nice, he just seems like he does this because he has nothing better to do, sooo yeah). Still, with Inaho being the lead protagonist, kind of worried this will go the typical shounen route.

I'm excited to be angry though. :P Hopefully that means something unexpected happens, for better or worse.

This last season of Downton Abbey is as awesome and stupid and ridiculous as I could have hoped for I'm so happy.

Haikyuu!!

[personal profile] hwc 2016-02-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
An anon mentioned it in GC a few days back and I've since binge-watched the anime, caught up with the manga and am now reading the fic (of which there is suprisingly much of).

I was pre-destined to like it because volleyball (VOLLEYBALL <3), but I was unprepared for how amazing this series is. The characters are absolutely precious and even the rival teams are great. I love almost everything about this series. <3

Re: Haikyuu!!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I started the manga yeaaars ago but kept putting it off (and I'm still nowhere near caught up), but I really do love it a lot. I'm always a sucker for sports manga, and this one is especially cute. The characters are super likeable, the matches are well written, though I've heard the fandom is kinda shitty, which is disappointing?

iZombie

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I just started season 2 and I like it! I think it has some tonal issues (Major's new gig is...a choice that they made. I'll be interested to see how that works out), but I'm hoping that Rob Thomas learned from his Veronica Mars mistakes. I like that, despite the crazy premise, it's more of a straight-forward procedural. And I really love the idea of a CW police procedural.

Re: iZombie

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think iZombie is okay, but lacks the cleverness and sass of Veronica Mars, imo. Also I think Kristen Bell was a much more charismatic and funny lead than Rose McIver.

But yeah, it's a cute, mostly enjoyable show.

I've bitched about Knights in the Nightmare before, but on replay, I think the problem was that I was trying to 100% it and keep every character "alive." It's a much easier game if you realize the protagonist considers his followers expendable and replaceable.

(With that said, holy crap those bossfights. What I wouldn't give for a smart bomb . . .)

Cold Case

[personal profile] loracarol 2016-02-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard that it gets weird in the later systems, but I'm really enjoying it. Especially the ones that go back further, or have the murder be because sociocultural norms, those ones are fascinating. It's like Cold Case went "the good old days? They were the real evil".

I'm liking it.

Black Sails

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I've binge watched the 2 first seasons on netflix last week and now i'm cursed with weekly waiting and suffering. It's been a while since a TV show catched my interest so much (last one was the 100 and I'm so glad the 3rd season's airing right now).
I'm a big fan of Treasure Island (my childhood book) and all the characters are awesome and I can't stop rewatching certain scenes because they're too good. Also, Captain Flint is absolutely amazing and one of my favourite leading characters of all the time.

I'm just sad almost nobody around me seems to know about this awesome show and they're not interested in pirate trivia as much as I am.

So anyone else here watching this show?

I watched the first two seasons and now I'm stuck waiting for the third too! It's a great series. Love the costumes, love the sets, love the relationships. And yes, Captain Flint is amazing. I'm thinking his old boyfriend is going to come back at some point.

Treasure Island was a great book too.

Fist of the North Star

Dear fandom friend,

Thank you so much for the rec! Aaaahhh I love it so much! I'm also really happy we have the same OTP again although I'm kind of scared of telling you because I swear I'm not doing it on purpose! OTL

I think if you liked the first three parts of JJBA (Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, and Stardust Crusaders), then FotNS is definitely something to look into. It's complete at 400+ chapters (some of the scanlations are really bad though) and features the original bara hunk himself, Kenshiro. <3

The villains are also really well-developed (with their own spin-off anime/manga series on top of extended manga arcs) and there's an additional pleasure in reading it because, well, it's past 200X and we've not reached apocalypse yet!

This being really old school shounen, the female characters are pretty lacking. There's like... three of them... and the most powerful/important one is noncombatative. Also all the male characters (well, all the powerful ones) are mad in love with her as a result of their ~*~shared childhood~*~. Yeah, I wouldn't recommend reading this if you can't stomach women being thrown around like potatoes.

But seeing as how I grew up on mahou shoujo stuff, having (1) guys with muscles and (2) guys who aren't just fodder to be kidnapped is pretty refreshing so I like it! :D

Thief

[personal profile] dethtoll 2016-02-14 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Been playing through this classic series again and it's just... so good to be back. I'm working my way through the original trilogy for now (off to a good start in Thief 2) but the reboot is also on the docket.

After spending so long making fun of the fandom, which is notoriously crazy, I'd forgotten how much I love this series. The atmosphere, the writing, the little ways Thief Gold foreshadows Thief 2 (and the ways Thief 2 foreshadows Thief 3!) The gameplay is as open-ended as ever, which I love because it's so obviously the basis for Deus Ex's "multiple approaches to any problem" gameplay.

Really, though, Dishonored fans should dig these things up off gog and give 'em a go. :)

The Librarians

[personal profile] ketita 2016-02-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember where I saw it, but I started watching and it's actually surprisingly adorable.
The premise is nothing new, but I like the campiness, I like that it doesn't take itself completely seriously, and I like that the characters all seem genuinely fond of each other. Pretty sure that when I have kids this is going to be my "family friendly" adventure rec - it even has some kickass girls!

Borderlands

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I am the tardiest person in the worldddd to this party but I just finished Tales from the Borderlands and I fell in LOVE. I know it's ridiculous to play the fourth game in the series first, but my brother pretty much shoved the controller into my hands when I was staying with him+my parents for a week and I killed the game in 2 days. I LOVED IT.

So, now I'm back at home and have downloaded the second game. For the first time in a while I have a non-shit laptop and I am gonna slay this fucking series!!! (I deliberated for a good while if I should start with the first or the second, but my brother and others have informed me that the second one is where the really good storyline starts. I hunger for that writing) (.....and kinda also Handsome Jack, but really it's more the story stuff. I was led to believe the first is kinda more dicking around in an open sandbox type of game whereas thr second is more....awesome plot in a sandbox game. I'M EXCITED!)

Gotham anyone?

I am almost done the first season and I'm kind of in love. This is everything I have ever wanted from a Batman property.

IT'S BATMAN WITHOUT BATMAN. I CAN JUST SKIP OVER ALL THE STUPID SHITKID BRUCE WAYNE SCENES.

Oh my god it's so good.

Hello! And AGREED. (Although I do actually kind of love baby batman because with him we get baby catwoman and her fun ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ descent into evil)

criminal mind season 6

(Anonymous) 2016-02-15 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm probably going tomake a secret about it for next weeek. NS: Did they retcon Reid's age? Because I remember him turni g 24 or 25 in season 1 and in season 6 they're talking bout schizophrenia manifesti g in mid to late 20s so this is a scary age for him. But he should be at least 30 now, right?

I don't care too much though, because I'm really enjoying that sgory line amd hoping it doesn't fall into a blaack hole like his addiction story (though I did appreciate that he jumped in with all the 12-step explanations in that Adrienne Palicki episode in a way that ws more than "here ar things I've read...).

Re: criminal mind season 6

[personal profile] slashgirl 2016-02-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think Reid's age is pretty much whatever MGG is in RL. There's something twigging in my memory about them making a very specific reference to his age--but my brain is old and it was many years ago. Although I'm certain they kept his age pretty consistent. And while schizophrenia is more likely to manifest in mid to late 20s, that doesn't mean it comes to a dead stop once he turned thirty. It just gets less likely.

You want fucked up? Try to figure out how old Aaron Hotchner is/how his timeline works. I gave up in 2010 (which is when I stopped being quite so much into the show). I actually have an LJ entry listing the issues/inconsistencies wrt to Hotch's age/timeline up until that point.

TL;DR: He'd pretty much have to be a child genius a la Reid to have done everything they've said he's done. I figured it out, he'd've had to graduate HS at about age 12. And that's just what we'd been given up to 2010...god only knows how much worse it is now...

He explicitly turns 30 in the first half of season 7.

Angbang Fandom

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-15 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I love my fandom. We did this whole Fluffy February thing. And we don't want the fun to end, so I suggested we do something for March and put up a post asking for suggestions. I suggested a prompt fest. Someone suggested a porn theme. I suggested that while I love porny myself there are some shippers who don't and I didn't want to exclude them from the fun.

This person got really offended somehow at the idea that some people might not like porn. They couched it in terms that were supposed to be flattering. Saying that since I'm so active in the fandom I should decide what I want and that the ones who don't like porn aren't active in the fandom. Which isn't true, and even if it wasn't not being active doesn't mean there shouldn't be something that everyone can enjoy.

The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, okay, they were trying to flatter me I guess. And in terms of amount of content I do post a lot, though it is most often short headcanon posts or short fics (admittedly mostly porn), and nothing like the epic fics that others create.

Honestly I think they just want porn. And I guess maybe they want my porn? But it was pretty rude to dismiss other fans. And I'm just really annoyed about this right now.
