Gotham anyone?

I am almost done the first season and I'm kind of in love. This is everything I have ever wanted from a Batman property.

IT'S BATMAN WITHOUT BATMAN. I CAN JUST SKIP OVER ALL THE STUPID SHITKID BRUCE WAYNE SCENES.

Hello! And AGREED. (Although I do actually kind of love baby batman because with him we get baby catwoman and her fun ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ descent into evil)

Baby Selena is probably my favorite female character on that entire goddamn show, and that's saying something with a show that's chock full of awesome female characters.

I ...also sometimes don't skip the babbyBruce scenes because god damn it Alfred is a BAMF and also adorable.

I eat up every scene with Sean Pertwee, regardless of who else is in them.

So. Many. Feels.

He's a terrific actor, does his character justice, and I respect his work but he reminds me so much of his dad that it's downright weird to watch sometimes. I met Jon a few times in the 80s and I wonder if Sean is as nice in RL as his father, if they have the same style of humor/whimsy. I hope so.

I always tend to think that a cast with that kind of acting talent have to at least be somewhat nice people. I think you have to really get along with your castmates in order to be able to play off them well, and Gotham has really surprised me with the acting.

The last television I watched that was based on a comic series was Daredevil, and it doesn't even hold a candle to the cast of Gotham. ...You know you're seeing real talent when you can take characters with the goofiest-sounding origin stories and personality traits and turn them into people that would believably exist in real life.

I would love to believe that. Herpy, but I am too old and jaded to think that talent lends itself only to well-adjusted psyches. While there are a number of lovely people with talent and grace, there are a few who could be the poster-children for narcissism.

Years ago, my husband worked as an extra on a movie with Daniel Stern and Patrick Dempsey. Dempsey was a delight, talking to the extras in a friendly fashion, encouraging them to pursue their dreams. He was kind and open and genuine. Stern otoh held himself aloof, surrounded by guards, and refused to acknowledge anyone in the vicinity. Both men are talented but had very different public personas.

I doubt that this is any different from the average in normal, non-acting populations, (it takes all kinds to make a world, doesn't it?)but I would like to believe that the graces that go into the talent of acting also so into the creation of decent and actualized humans and maybe it does, I don't know.

Hahahaaa I just wanted to talk about Gotham because holy shit is it ever rare for me to find television that I like these days. The problem with being a writer is it just gets harder to find something to read, you know?

Also it's pretty cool that your husband worked as a movie extra. It's always been a vague goal of mine (and you'd think I'd have realized it by now given where I live currently), but hasn't been in the cards yet.

If you have the opportunity, I hope you take it and try being an extra. It was a fun experience, made for a great story, and we had a wonderful time.

Gotham is one of my go-to shows atm. I really liked the interaction between Nigma and the Penguin this season and the addition of several actors to the cast, most of whom I have followed before and am happy to see more of. I can't wait to see some of the new characters that have been teased.

I wondered if you were a Batman fan before the show or if the show is what reeled you into itself? I liked Gotham itself as I am not a DC Comics reader, I am not well-versed in the Batman mythos and so, I thought perhaps I am one of a minority.

Well, I've read and watched various Batman properties off and on. Never for Batman.

I actually really dislike Bruce Wayne as a surface concept. I've always found him to be a huge, whiny, self-important man child going about a problem in the absolute most counterproductive way possible. Simply by existing he creates more supervillains, since a good portion of them come into being in order to pit themselves against a worthy foe (Riddler is a great example, actually).

What I so love about the property really is the villains themselves... the way they each personify a psychological disorder, and in a way represent that disorder in Batman himself. The only way I enjoy Batman is seeing him as a sick individual battling physical representations of his psychosis.

So... this show is everything I've ever wanted, really. A Batman property where Batman is a supporting character at best? Hell yes. HELL yes.
