buying new things is hard

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm shopping around for computers and man, this is difficult. I just want something that can play the Sims 3/4 and Steam games (not triple A Steam games, not super indie games, just...Steam games?) but I'm afraid to get something that's too low end and I can't really afford anything too high end and I don't know how to build my own PC and aaauuugh.

What are you struggling to buy, f!s?

Oh man, buying my most recent laptop was the worst. And I had several back issues of Consumer Reports which somehow made it worse.

I'm seriously considering buying myself a pearl necklace. I've always wanted one, and I've found one in my price range, but then I wonder how much I would actually wear it, and if the length of this one would be too weird on me. I need to actually try it on and hopefully that will help me make up my mind.

Nothing at the moment. But the most recent struggle was finding a bridesmaid dress for my sister's wedding. Which wouldn't have been hard except that the company we got custom dresses from somehow couldn't follow the measurements we gave and then refused to refund us more than 30%. Finally found a dress from Target of all places. It isn't great (it is pink, which I hate, but they didn't have the other color option). But it works.

I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago! I've only really used consoles for gaming, so I had no clue what exactly to look for (and had to ask a couple friends for advice to help me figure it out, haha). Luckily I was shopping around Black Friday and ended up finding something decent for a relatively cheap price.

Good luck with your search!

OP

what did you end up buying?

Building your own PC apparently isn't that hard and I've heard several people comparing it to building lego, if the fact that you don't know how is the thing that's stopping you. I considered doing it myself when I got my last computer, but found that I would save a minimal amount of money due to costs in my country. Check out r/buildapc and pcpartpicker.com for some prices and such.

I'm currently struggling not to buy anything at all, besides food, as I'll be going on a trip to New York City with my mother and sister in two weeks time and I want to have as much spending money as possible. But there are so many things I want to buy right now, so it is a bit hard.

Basically you are looking for two things. A good video card (and what powers it) and good RAM.

Use this site to pick a video card (best option is to find one you can afford on the best value page). http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/

Then find a power supply that can run it and is compatible. Then make sure you have at least 4 gb of RAM (though 6 would be better).

Buy a cheapish computer and replace the video card (maybe power supply) and add RAM is needed. Changing a video card and power supply is easy as fuck.

Yeah, this, pretty much. Make sure your power supply (the big box in the back of the machine that you plug the fat power cable into) is strong enough for the GPU, however. It's probably not an issue now but about 7 years ago I ran into trouble when I didn't read the fine print and my new GPU was too much for my crappy, low-wattage PSU.

Wanted to say, stick with NVidia. They're not as good as they used to be, but IMO they're still ahead of AMD, and much easier to deal with when it comes to installing new drivers. Just research the model and manufacturer, first.

Sweatshirts. It's almost spring so I want a pullover that's thin enough to wear under my jacket on extra-cold days without suffocating me, but it's so hard to find ones that are cute and cheap! I have this gorgeous floral one from H&M that was only £5, but I'm beginning to think it's one of a kind :( I wouldn't mind buying more expensive ones online if they're good quality, but I'm bad with measurements and I don't want to accidentally buy a size that'll look bad on me and waste time and money sending it back.

Funko Pops. I just want to buy them all. But because I can't I can never decide what I want and I don't buy any. :(

I want to get some more tea tomorrow, but the tea I buy is not cheap, and most of my stock is badly depleted. At the very least I should get some Pumping Pomegranate and Strawberry Sensation. I want a bag of Southern Sunrise, but I'll have to decide on that tomorrow.

God, I hear this. I need somethinv that will let me play Sims 2, maybe some games like I Am Bread, watch things on Netflix/Youtube/Hulu, and write in Scrivener.

People were telling me I pretty much HAD to have at least 8 RAM, but when I look at what I've got, I've been doing fine with 4. Of course one of the people really pushing 8 was the sort to (literally) have 100+ tabs open, some with streaming video, heavy duty writing software and a music player all up at the same time.

I've been thinking about getting a Surface, but I'm worried about being able to download YT videos and whatnot. (Been burned by things disappearing.)

Purple shoes to go with a gala dress. I have a fundamental problem spending a lot of money (in my case, "a lot" is defined as "over $25") on something I'm going to wear once.

So I'm trying to find comfortable things I will actually enjoy wearing to SF conventions without killing my feet and my back and coming up completely blank, at least locally. It's crazy-making.

A new bed.

I don't want to use a box spring, but I don't want built-in underbed storage either (I want room to put things under there, but I find drawers too obtrusive) and furniture stores around here mostly offer beds that either need a box spring or have drawers. I want a headboard but not a foot board, and I'd like a real bed frame, not just a metal stand (don't think those work without a box spring, anyway) with a headboard bolted to it. I'd also like something mid-range, but it seems like everything is either cheap but really cheap looking, or costs over $2000, and that's before I buy a mattress for it. I'll probably buy something online, but it's a large, important piece of furniture and I'd like to see what I'm getting first before it shows up in pieces at my door.

So depending on my tax situation this year, I could end up getting $6,000 back because of school, or owing $50,000 because inheritance stuff and my family, including the executor of my grandparents', dad's, and one uncle's estate, not knowing what he was doing. I want to buy plants and seeds and put in a garden, but I need to know if I'm gonna get an extra 6k or lose the money that was gonna put me through grad school and fix up my mom's house while she's still around to enjoy it. Plus there's a couple of nerdy tshirts I've been eying. And my computer is, er, 9 years old? Maybe 10. I could use a new one. And eyeglasses.
