In comics (and I guess in published books, if it ever happens) when they want to have a character swear but don't have the fucking balls to do it, then they put in a load of symbols instead. It just dumps me out, either swear properly or write dialogue without the swearing. Trying to fake-swear is just so try hard.

I feel this way about a lot of media. It's not enough to make me avoid things entirely but it's annoying. The only time it doesn't bug me is if it's in newspaper comics - the swearing is there because it makes sense for the characters but it has to be censored so the papers can stay PG. (Usually they don't even put in the first letter, so it's less "Character said this word" and more "Character just let out a stream of colorful expletives and it's funny".

Mad magazine did that all the time when I was a kid, what skeeved me out was they had no problem making creepy jokes about rape or really racist jokes but you would never see anybody swear.
