Weird and/or unpopular reasons you won't read/watch certain things

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Can be as specific or general as you'd like.

Parks and Recreation, because I still don't trust Adam Scott based on that one guest appearance on Veronica Mars in which he was skeevy as all get out.

Oh man, wasn't he the teacher who got a student pregnant? Eww, he was SUPER creepy! I haven't watched Parks and Rec either, but mostly because I swing towards angst and drama more than comedy.

First person. Anything in first person and I'm out (or second person for that matter but that rarely shows up in published books). It just doesn't work for me. I can't get into it.

Shows or movies where there isn't a single character I can root for or be interested in, especially if you are actually supposed to root for characters who are awful.

If a character has an incurable illness, unless they die early on (so it's not the whole story), I'm out. I don't care that it's Real Life and Deep. I almost stopped watching Mad Men when a certain character was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer at the end of the last season, and probably would've if it hadn't been the last three episodes or so.

Just... can't, for once, someone be hit by a bus or something?

I won't watch some super popular series like Star Wars, Jurassic Park or the Matrix because I was never interested in them as a kid and it'd just be too weird to start now.

I also won't watch any Iron Man films because I have a huge grudge against Robert Downey Jr (though I can't remember why anymore).

The creator's pre-existing fanbase. If they are all super creepy about their God Prince of '90s Tropes then I want to stay far, far away from what they are selling. I just can't watch any of their shows without picturing the creepy all consuming fans, and that ruins any chance it has with me.

In comics (and I guess in published books, if it ever happens) when they want to have a character swear but don't have the fucking balls to do it, then they put in a load of symbols instead. It just dumps me out, either swear properly or write dialogue without the swearing. Trying to fake-swear is just so try hard.

Tough female characters with alcoholism and/or rape in their backstory. I'm more than fed up with that trope.

I try to avoid stuff with sex in them. Yes, even fanfiction, unless it's for a pairing I really like, or it's one of those long fics where the sex is incidental, or is what the story builds up to. I'm just really not interested in sex, and I get pretty exasperated by gratuitous sex in novels. Not that I think people shouldn't be able to enjoy a bit of smut in their thrillers or anything, it's just my personal preference.

I refuse to watch the second season of Broadchurch because I googled how it ended and just the idea depresses me.

I tell people I never read Outlander because period romances aren't my thing. I like historical fiction, just not with almost total romantic focus.

Truthfully that's only a small part of it. Mostly I couldn't get past the written-out Scottish accents.

I feel bad about this because I'm of Scottish heritage...

I won't watch something if everyone tells me that I should by bashing something else.

For example, I still haven't watched Fury Road, because I'm one of those weirdos who actually enjoyed Jurassic World, and when Fury Road first came out, all I saw were people talking about it terms of how much Jurassic World was literally the new Hitler of movies.

(And, I s2g, if anyone tries to tell me that I ~need~ to watch Fury Road because omg you don't understand it's so much better! you will literally be proving my point, and I will definitely not become magically interested in watching it.)

Not always, but I have turned away from a show or movie if there aren't shippable characters.

I won't watch anything that's grim-dark or "realistic". I want media to be fun (and by fun, I mean I hope Civil War rips my heart out because I'm still pretty sure I'll get a happy ending in the end). This can sometimes extend to "artsy" Oscar-bait type movies.

Sometimes my interactions with fans of a fandom have turned me off a fandom (i.e. Steven Universe). Also, any time people go on and on about the SJ points the media gets, it lessens my interest considerably.

I won't watch shit on Netflix because I hate the medium, but if it comes out on DVD, I'll check it out.

If a show/movie's premise looks like it's going to have a lot of embarrassing moments, I'm out of there.

I won't watch any Roman Polanski film because Roman Polanski.

I got told by multiple people that I hate art.

SPOILERS FOR CHINATOWN and TW: RAPE

Working in an animal shelter ruined 101 Dalmations for me... Now when I see it, I can only think, "Spay and neuter your pets!"

I will never, ever watch Doctor Who nor Torchwood because my best friend's great idea to convert me to Captain Jack's worshipping cult was to force me to watch The Empty Child and The Parting of the Ways with no warning - and mock me when I emerged from the experience with a gasmask phobia.

Anything vampire that came out after Twilight, because it's probably going to be inspired heavily by Twilight, and VAMPIRES DON'T WORK LIKE THAT! *froths*

Anything I watch solely for an actor takes a certain amount of psyching up. I just recently watched Beasts of No Nation and will watch The East sometime next month after recording it in September.

I've kind of lost interest in watching anything made by DreamWorks and Laika because I'm really annoyed by how so many people keep pushing them as the "progressive" alternative to Disney/Pixar or some shit.

Anything Edgar Wright related because I'm sick of people praising him like he's God's gift to comedy. Scott Pilgrim did nothing for me.

I won't watch or read something when I'm given nothing but social-justice-y reasons for why I would supposedly like it (e.g. "it has lesbians/gays/trans people/Strong Women/POC/disabled people/all of the above/etc.").

To me that's the fandom equivalent of the Nice Guy(TM) argument. It tells me nothing about whether the work is any good. And if "it has (Insert Marginalized Group Here)!" is literally all you can tell me about it, then I'm going to assume that it has no other merits worth mentioning and is therefore not my bag.

I have a profound "ugh" reaction to descriptions of new parenthood where it's described as this wondrous experience that alters the way a character looks at life and themself, and where they love their perfect offspring from the depths of their very soul from the first instant they lay eyes on them.

I know that's actually what it's like for a lot of new parents, but for some reason it just puts me off so, so badly. Probably because I feel like it gets shoved down my throat so often and for the most part it's not even openly questioned (except occasionally in discussions of postpartum depression). The thing is, I don't think I really want kids. And if I do end up having a kid I just know it's going to be a long, challenging process where my love for them is forged slowly over time. I honestly cannot imaging loving something that just emerged from my body.

Really, I feel most comfortable when a character's reaction to being a new parent is numb exhaustion and emotional dissociation. The farther towards transcendent joy it gets, the more I nope the fuck out of there.

fucking undertale.

every time someone recs it to me, they say "I can't tell you about it or I'll ruin the story but it's really good" and that just does NOT inspire any fucking confidence at all. all the reviews I've seen say the same thing (YOU JUST HAVE TO PLAY IT!!! they shriek, like somehow that's going to make me want to play it?). all the information I've found is disjointed & nonsensical. it all just looks like such a mess and not one person has been able to explain to me why they like it? seriously?

also I really dislike the 8-bit style bc I feel like it's been overused, but also this particular game does not use it very well, so that's part of it too.
