They don't see why what he did matters. I had someone ask me if I was going to never watch a film with Winona Ryder in it because of her kleptomania.

I think it was about then that I realized that I probably should stop hanging around those people.

(I saw Rosemary's Baby and loved it before I learned what kind of shitbag he was. I sometimes hear or read how great some other one of his other big legendary films was, and get curious and kinda/really want to see it, and then am repulsed by myself)

As a film noir fan I really want to see Chinatown, but it's not going to happen because of fucking Roman Polanski.

I had to watch Chinatown for a class and ultimately you're not really missing out on much. I can see why everyone loves it, but holy fuck is it uncomfortable to watch in the context of Polanski's life.

There's too many good, if not better noir films out there to see for you to regret not watching this one.

Do you mind elaborating? One of the really annoying arguments I've heard when I said I wasn't going to watch Polanski films was some bullshit about how there's no children being raped in his films blah blah hate the artist not the art blah blah pomo bullshit. I fail to see how that makes a difference.

HOLY FUCKITY FUCK WHOEVER TOLD THIS TO YOU IS EITHER FLAT OUT LYING OR HAS ZERO COMPREHENSION WHEN IT COMES TO WATCHING FILMS.

One of the big twists in Chinatown is that the main villain, Noah Cross raped his daughter (Evelyn, the main femme fatale of the movie) when she was fifteen, impregnating her and raising the resulting baby as her "sister". The movie ends with Evelyn getting shot and dying while Cross gets away with everything, walking away scot-free. His last scene is him leading Evelyn's sister/daughter away from the dead Evelyn.

YEAH. WEALTHY POWERFUL PEDOPHILE GETS AWAY WITH HIS CRIMES. LITTLE BIT UNCOMFORTABLE IN THE CONTEXT OF REAL LIFE.
