Re: Weird and/or unpopular reasons you won't read/watch certain things

I will never, ever watch Doctor Who nor Torchwood because my best friend's great idea to convert me to Captain Jack's worshipping cult was to force me to watch The Empty Child and The Parting of the Ways with no warning - and mock me when I emerged from the experience with a gasmask phobia.

Damn that's...wow

I don't blame you. That's like telling someone to watch FMA and not warning them about Nina.

I'm sorry about that.

I suppose it depends. It's shocking because it's horrifying to think about, though the other things that happen are bad too.

I think it's a combination of factors. And the fact that it was the Elric bros' first taste of some of the horrifying things they encounter outside personal tragedies and it doesn't even ease into it it's just BAM, father experiments on his four year old daughter and dog and causes them a horrible fate just because he could.

Also for a lot of people who watched it for the first time it was extra horrifying because it was a special kind of adult fear. And quite a few people who were first watching the 2003 series (including me) were young.

First taste? Personnally I felt that Trisha's death and the transmutation accident were worse, and they came first. Also, Barry the Chopper (2003 series) was just as bad.

Well true. But I feel like in their position I'd consider my own personal tragedy different from others, if that makes sense.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that for the 12-3 year old Ed and his younger brother. The incident with Nina hits a special button because of the fact that the monster in that was the victim's FATHER and the fact that he seemed like such a loving father before that. There were no obvious indicators that he was hurting Nina in any way. Which is why it was such a shock.

It really drove home the fact that not all parents protect their kids. For a kid that's sort of a shocking and hard lesson to take. Made even worse by the fact that a nice seeming guy did it and for no other reason than "to see if I could". It had the element of surprise on it's side, like any good twist does.

I think all those factors play into it.

Those other things you mentioned are horrible too, but this one stands out because of the fact that Shou Tucker is a parent who seemed loving, and then turned around and did something horrifying, and for little reason other than "because why not". It was Ed and Al's first taste of the lesson that some parents can be absolute monsters to the very people who are in their protection. Which is horrifying to a lot of people. To children and young teens and to adults who have children.

I hope I explained it well. It's not so much that it's any more horrifying than anything else, but it's a unique kind of horrifying.

Personally I've seen half the original show, and the Nina ep was definitely the most emotional and made me bawl, but I don't feel like someone should have "warned" me about it. However, I was also recommended the show by a friend, and I can see how it would affect some people more than others.

That person sounds stupid if they cannot understand why "The Empty Child" episode would give someone a phobia.

And I will never read Y The Last Man precisely because of the gasmask thing.
