So I liked Dear Prudie for a long time. Then she started her whole blaming women for being raped by drunk thing and I stopped reading her. But I like the new person a lot so I'm reading it again.

I like Dear Abby a lot. A classic.

I liked Dear Margo for a long time until she stopped doing them.

I love advice columns too, and I actually wish I knew what the new ones are. More modern takes that are well done.

Wait... what?! Yikes. Is that why there's a new person?

Yeah, same.

That became one of her pet things: blaming women and also suggesting it wasn't really rape if she was drunk. And complaining that colleges were too proactive with investigating rape on their campuses.

That was Emily Yoffe. She's been doing that for a couple years now. I don't know if that's the reason she left, but she went to another publication. Slate's new person is Melody something or other. She's a lesbian and younger than Emily was, so I think she brings a new perspective that is interesting. Her writing style is very different, but I like it.

I don't think she was blaming women for their own rapes, as much as she was just saying to use common sense and not get blackout drunk at a frat party. I don't think she was saying anyone got what they deserved.

And honestly, if two people are drunk and they fuck, that is kind of a gray area.

If they're both drunk, then it is gray. If she's the only one drunk or he's much less drunk than her (he's aware enough to consent, she isn't), then it is rape.

I think that was what she was trying to do maybe. But some of the stuff she wrote definitely veered into blaming women. She did say some stuff to the affect that women are responsible if they get drunk and then get raped.

Is Dear Margo different from Dear Prudence and is that different from Dear Prudie? (I used to read Dear Prudence and I think it was written by someone named Margo)

Yes? I think Margo used to write another column, so maybe she wrote Prudie before? She's the daughter of Ann Landers. She had her own advice column for a while, but it disappeared. As long as I've been reading Prudie it has been written by Emilie Yoffe until she retired this year.

Ah, ok. I did not realize that. (In my defense I have not read the columns regularly since I moved out of my parents' house since I don't get a newspaper subscription.)
