Advice bloggers/columnists

I have to admit I really like reading advice columns. What do you think of them and what are some of your faves?

Or least faves

Least fave would probably be Miss Manners just because it is boring and most of the time I don't care. And while some of her advice is good, a lot of it is really outdated.

Huh. I have a book of Miss Manners and I find the writing style hilarious.

So I liked Dear Prudie for a long time. Then she started her whole blaming women for being raped by drunk thing and I stopped reading her. But I like the new person a lot so I'm reading it again.

I like Dear Abby a lot. A classic.

I liked Dear Margo for a long time until she stopped doing them.

I love advice columns too, and I actually wish I knew what the new ones are. More modern takes that are well done.

Wait... what?! Yikes. Is that why there's a new person?

Yeah, same.

That became one of her pet things: blaming women and also suggesting it wasn't really rape if she was drunk. And complaining that colleges were too proactive with investigating rape on their campuses.

That was Emily Yoffe. She's been doing that for a couple years now. I don't know if that's the reason she left, but she went to another publication. Slate's new person is Melody something or other. She's a lesbian and younger than Emily was, so I think she brings a new perspective that is interesting. Her writing style is very different, but I like it.

I don't think she was blaming women for their own rapes, as much as she was just saying to use common sense and not get blackout drunk at a frat party. I don't think she was saying anyone got what they deserved.

And honestly, if two people are drunk and they fuck, that is kind of a gray area.

Is Dear Margo different from Dear Prudence and is that different from Dear Prudie? (I used to read Dear Prudence and I think it was written by someone named Margo)

Yes? I think Margo used to write another column, so maybe she wrote Prudie before? She's the daughter of Ann Landers. She had her own advice column for a while, but it disappeared. As long as I've been reading Prudie it has been written by Emilie Yoffe until she retired this year.

Ah, ok. I did not realize that. (In my defense I have not read the columns regularly since I moved out of my parents' house since I don't get a newspaper subscription.)

Dear Abby, but only for the comments.

I read Captain Awkward sometimes. But some of the commenters are the rabid SJW types.

LOL, no. I read the comments section regularly, and if you think those people are rabid SJWs then you've lived a sheltered life.

TBH, this series of threads did turn me off of her for a little:

http://captainawkward.com/2013/04/20/476-i-have-anxiety-that-women-will-have-anxiety-about-me-approaching-them/

Admittedly, she did apologize here,

http://captainawkward.com/2013/04/22/477-again/

but her original response (and the people in the comments) really bugged me, and did feel a little bit "rabid SJW-y"

Or this one: http://captainawkward.com/2014/12/19/649-and-650-making-room-for-the-ones-you-love-is-how-they-know-you-love-them/
though they did revisit it here: http://captainawkward.com/2014/12/23/649-revisited-some-blog-admin/

Carolyn Hax! I don't always agree with her (and I haaaate her "While I'm away, readers give the advice" thing she does when she takes a week off, so skip those) but she samples an interesting array of issues in her columns, she does great weekly chats at the Washington Post website, and there are great cartoons that go with every column. I still have one that I cut out of the paper 8 years ago with a bridesmaid toasting "I listen to you complain about this guy for years and in return you give me this dress...for which I had to pay. To friendship!"

I generally like her, too. I feel like she's gotten blunter over time, maybe a couple times to the detriment of her answer, but she also takes it well if someone brings up a good point she may have overlooked.

I don't mind the "while I'm away" bit but it's definitely not as good as when she's answering.

The polyamorous misanthrope.

She's blunt and to the point. I love it. While she might not update a lot, there's tons of good stuff.

I really like Captain Awkward, Ask Amy, Ask Carolyn Hax, and Ask Polly. Sometimes I read Doctor Nerdlove too, but his focus is fairly specific (addressing geeks, mostly male ones, who are trying to fix their love life) so it's not terribly relevant to my interests.

I love them! I don't always agree with them but they're entertaining.

I've enjoyed most of the ones I've read. Mom and I used to read Ann Landers/Annie's Mailbox and Dear Prudence, both of whom we frequently disagreed with, as well as Carolyn Hax, who I usually agreed with (and loved her style) and Miss Manners, who we usually agree with and tends to be really funny. I also remember reading Dear Abby but I don't remember if I had any opinions on it.

As someone who has benefited from and worked with them, I'd heavily recommend mentalillnessmouse.tumblr.com.
