I was under the impression that most of the 'grown-up' anime shows were actually marketed toward kids in Japan.

Those would be more teen shows and even then there's a lot of exceptions. It's more of what's considered kid friendly, and it toes the line a bit more often. Like in the US, Batman: The Animated Series pushed the line of what entertainment for children could contain, but in a fair amount (I wouldn't say "a lot" or "a little" but a notable number) of anime shows, that line that BTAS pushed is just already sitting there.

Most of the stuff that people like here is late night anime, though. Late night anime is marketed towards a more niche audience where as daytime is for stuff with broader appeal like kids shows and stuff like One Piece. That said the late night stuff is usually marketed towards older teens and twenty-somethings.

Yes. One Piece is considered kids' fare, or something dads watch with their sons. Everything in Shounen Jump, like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Reborn, Prince of Tennis, etc. etc. is considered for children and airs in the middle of the day. If you still like it when you're in high school, it's considered rather childish.

A lot of ecchi shows, like the Love Hina-esque variety, are actually for like 14 year old boys. They're not really meant for adults - that's why they never have sex in them, just teasing and boobs and panties.

There are late-night shows, though, for sure, but most animators would rather get their stuff shown in the middle of the day because it gets more views. So they make it family friendly (and Japan they aren't as prudish as Americans, so what is seen as family friendly is far broader a category. IE, they show Princess Mononoke in the middle of the day with no warnings for violence. And it is considered a family movie).
