I feel like Rey's character is incomplete. They purposefully left off her backstory because they have two more movies that are going to work with this one. I imagine it's going to reveal something important. I just don't think it's fair to judge her as poorly written when we're only 1/3 of the way in.

This. I mean look at Luke Skywalker's backstory in ANH:

- Father was a Jedi, a pilot and a good friend to Kenobi. His father also served in the Clone Wars with Kenobi.

- Darth Vader, former pupil of Kenobi, murdered Luke's father (though from a certain point of view, but we didn't took it that way yet until Empire and Jedi with the big reveal that Vader is Luke's dad, etc.)

- Luke worked on his uncle and aunt's farm after being raised by them *cough*superman*cough*. Had friends at the Tosche Station, one of them being Biggs. (depends on the cut of the film you're watching, though you can grasp the idea via the blu ray's deleted scenes)

- Has hidden force abilities and was shown to use them by fighting a training remote.

- Is also a good pilot. Biggs sacrificed his life on the Battle of Yavin to defend Luke from Vader and Han came back to save Luke.

That's Luke's character in a nutshell. It's kinda 1/3 in like Rey's and I think that's what we're going to get in the next movies: more backstory and more character development, just like Luke.
