Hardy har har. If you want to see some Transformers bullshit post in GC or make some secrets. Stop ignoring blatant signals - like giant Star Wars screen grabs - so you can bemoan that your TFA is differrent from the current popular one.

"The plot is chock full of weird bullshit and inconsistencies"

Oh, so you went in not expecting a Star Wars movie?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the OP meant "weird inconsistencies and bullshit are part of star wars, you don't have to claim the movie was free of them to claim it was a good star wars movie"

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Plenty of fans absolutely are arguing the opposite, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly, op, i think everyone is just fucking tired of the criticism and overwhelming negativity from the prequels so they're instead going hard in the opposite direction

I can't speak for anyone else but my problem with it is that that kind of critical viewpoint is wrong and dumb, and leads to really fucking same-y, boring movies.

It's a space adventure. Who gives a fuck about plotholes. Fuck outta here with that.

Well, it's a space opera action sci-fi, where the plot's movement is supposed to be quick and fun. I am not excusing plot holes, just saying, I don't think small plot holes necessarily take away from the film if the plot is not meant to be super realistic in the first place. After all, Star Wars is not and has never been (except maybe in some of the EU) "realistic". It's not a fleshed out world with piping, sewers and real economy. It's not complete world-building, it's about imagery and ideals. It's essentially good vs evil, with an evil empire that is generally evil Just Because (just like the Force has a Dark Side, aka Just Evil).

and it's okay, that's what the series aims for, so I don't go in expecting a super clever plot that's fully fleshed out.

As for Rey, I'm not saying she's the best character of the year but I'm skeptical that she's badly written, too. Until we know more about her past, I'm reserving judgment as to why she was able to learn the Force so quickly and beat Kylo Ren - that was really my only issue with her. She did seem a bit OP. But I still found her interesting and likable. Her introductory scenes alone, even though she didn't say much, really stuck out to me.

Most of those things you've mentioned are entirely subjective. Shocking that different people have different opinions about movies, right? I don't think the writing was weak, and neither do many people.

""The plot is chock full of weird bullshit and inconsistencies""

It's called "The Force", jeez do your homework.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe we are just pig-fucking-sick of over analyzing everything to the nth degree in order to find something to sneer at and try to make ourselves look clever? Maybe that trend has just fucking finished because it made everyone miserable and we're going all in on having fun now? Piss off.

Personally, I'm just waiting until the other two movies to come out to see what's a plot hole, and what's a dangling plot thread that'll be resolved in a later film.

Though, some of the things people call 'plot holes' are things I don't agree should be called that? Like, people asking how those bounty hunters found the Millennium Falcon so quickly - Han said it himself, he was looking for it, and he found it, was it so hard to believe other people might be doing the same?

Or the whole "where did the First Order come from" thing, like, did people really believe that killing the emperor would cause the entire empire to just ~magically collapse~?

Why do you think Rey isn't well written? I mean obviously her character is going to be expanded upon in the later movies, but she not badly written imo.

I admit I'm really defensive about this movie, but that's because it's such an important movie for me. Is it shakespeare? No. Is it even as good as the original 3? Meh, maybe. But what it is, is the point at which we take scifi away from the men. We're sick of being relegated to fantasy and *ugh* urban fantasy. We deserve scifi and this is the movie, the big mainstream movie, the pinnacle of dude-bro male centered scifi, and we get to have it, not them. So yeah, maybe it's not a great film, but it was theirs and now it's ours and I want them to see how much we're enjoying it.

I'm glad Rey exists for kids!
I found her horribly terribly boring as an adult. I'm hoping she'll get fleshed out more in other movies.
I love female characters too so i was pretty disappointed.

I feel like Rey's character is incomplete. They purposefully left off her backstory because they have two more movies that are going to work with this one. I imagine it's going to reveal something important. I just don't think it's fair to judge her as poorly written when we're only 1/3 of the way in.

I hope for an extended edition or at least deleted scenes. A lot of the movie doesn't make sense to me (it did, but I've felt as if something was missing...) and I feel as if a lot of things got cut. Here's hoping episode VIII explains a lot of the plot holes.

Yeah, I'm with you there. I mean, I enjoyed the movie, but it felt very same-y compared to the other movies. It's a fun watch for me, but nothing to get all crazy about.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-15 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Rey's characterization was just fine. (The one that bugged me was Finn. First, there was no rationale given for why this guy who'd been brainwashed since he was four would suddenly decide that everything he'd been taught was wrong. Second, his about-face from conflicted stormtrooper upset about that other stormtrooper's death to guy who cheerfully shoots up a bunch of stormtroopers was very weird. I thought Finn was a likable character anyway, but my appreciation for the movie as a whole took an early nosedive.)

All of your other criticisms are spot-on, though.
