I thought Rey's characterization was just fine. (The one that bugged me was Finn. First, there was no rationale given for why this guy who'd been brainwashed since he was four would suddenly decide that everything he'd been taught was wrong. Second, his about-face from conflicted stormtrooper upset about that other stormtrooper's death to guy who cheerfully shoots up a bunch of stormtroopers was very weird. I thought Finn was a likable character anyway, but my appreciation for the movie as a whole took an early nosedive.)

All of your other criticisms are spot-on, though.

Obviously The Force Awakened something in him. If you see a characterization flaw in Star Wars, just close your eyes, take a deep breath, and call it "The Force" was with them.
