Why specifically do you think Rey was badly written? I disagree, though I'm no literary analyst or anything.

Not OP, but I think Rey was shallowly written verse badly written if that makes sense. I think the reason why there's a legit case to call her a Mary Sue is because her past is a blank slate. If she talked about the person who took her in and taught her how to fly ships, repair them, fight with her staff thing and therefor a light saber, then her skills would seem less ridiculously convenient. There would be another reason besides "The Force."

Also I don't think she has much of a personality. When Finn is going to leave she acts like she barely even cares. One would think she'd have abandonment issues. A person with abandonment issues would either a)try to convince him to stay or b) yell at them, play it off like they don't care because they're mad at themselves for even thinking they could rely on another person.

So yeah, it's nice that little girls want to be cool like Rey and go on adventures but that doesn't make her a dynamic, complex character who I am eagerly anticipating knowing more about.

I think her past will be revealed in future movies, something which I believe was set up on purpose by the narrative, so I don't think it's that much of a stretch that she learned some skills from someone yet unrevealed?

Also, is she really skilled with a lightsaber? The only lightsaber battle I remember her having was the one with Kylo Ren, where he was purposefully not killing her. (If I've forgotten one I need to go re-watch it I guess...I tend to forget details.)

How do you know she would respond to being left the same way? Are all people who have been abandoned the same psychologically? Maybe she's used to it? Maybe she didn't feel that attached to him yet? And let's be real, if she'd made a big deal of Finn leaving the fanbase would be shitting itself over her not being a Strong Independent Woman who Doesn't Need a Man. Anyway I don't think she was really relying on anyone but herself, at any point.

She's not the most complex character out there, though she's pretty good for Star Wars IMO. Whether you want to know more about her is up to you as that's entirely subjective. I'm definitely looking forward to finding out more.

"For Star Wars," I guess that's true. I'm not really a fan of Star Wars in general, so I maybe she's complex compared to Luke but I don't care enough to think too hard about it.

God forbid a female character has flaws! ::sigh:: At this point in my life I have next to zero patience for feminist "critic" of media. Any point they have is often coated in layers and layers of bullshit that I just don't care to see past most days. But you're right that not everyone deals with loss and abandonment the same way however, she's the character we're supposed to access the story through on an emotional level. If she doesn't care that Finn leaves, why should *we* care?

She was skilled enough with her light saber to beat someone who probably had some training with a light saber. I guess that that's assumed for Kylo Ren but he wouldn't get far in his sith training if no one taught him some light saber fighting, right?

I watched a video once where they said Rey wasn't a Sue because protagonists of action adventure stories like this are usually just Special in some way. I suppose that's true but it doesn't really make Rey a better character, it just means the people who write these stories are lazy and unimaginative.
