TMJ, Insurance, and Stress

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-02-16 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
So, I am like 99% sure I have TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder). I have had one past instance of clenching my teeth so hard that my jaw hurt really bad. But after realizing what was happening, I was able to stop myself from clenching.

But for the past week it has happened again. I had a day where my jaw was killing me and at first I thought I had a bad tooth. But after a couple days, it just turned into an ache in my joint/jaw. And it clicks when I open or close my mouth. And some days are better than others but I am always sort of aware of it (today is like a moderate day).

I got a mouth guard to prevent clenching and I have been trying to be less stressed (I think I am stressed over my trip and family problems). But so far, it hasn't helped. And because I don't have dental insurance, I can't really afford to go (honestly they would not be able to do much anyway). I am thinking of going to urgent care to see if they will give me muscle relaxers, but right now I am just hoping and trying to be lower my stress.

Ick. I'm sorry. I have TMJ too. I have a mouth guard to sleep with, but it doesn't always help. I hope you feel better soon.

I am going to try and use some moist heat on it tonight, hopefully that helps.

That should help. Sometimes if my pain is bad I'll put the wrap around heating pad on. Heating pads are a miracle invention. They work for so many things. I've been pretty much living with mine set on low on my back for the past couple of weeks.

Fellow TMJ sufferer here! I have bad days where my jaw aches (Especially in the cold) or locks up, and it ALWAYS clicks, there's no downtime from that. I've known for five years, so it's certainly something you can live with. Ibuprofen will help with swelling and pain, as will keeping warm, I have many more problems in the winter than any other time.

Definitely use your mouth guard! I grind my teeth in my sleep if I'm sick, and that makes everything worse. If a day seems worse than others, avoid things that require heavy chewing such as gum or tough meats. (For me, popcorn makes things worse on a bad day.)

If you can scrounge up the money, I would go just to make sure it's TMJ and not something more serious, but you should be able to self-manage, I never did get the surgery they wanted for me.

Good luck!

Yeah, I've only had problems with it once. I think it is the stress. Hopefully it goes away after I try to relax a bit more. The mouth guard has definitely helped!

It could be! Stress makes you tense, tense makes it worse. Have some comfort food and a good movie.

I have/had that too. It's partly stress and grinding my teeth, partly because my jaw apparently isn't properly aligned or something. The doctor told me to use a warm wet washcloth to relax the muscles. But he also gave me exercises to do. They're a bit dumb but it does sort of work. Basically you put pressure on your chin with your hand(s): from underneath, from the left, the right, the top. But you push back with your jaw, sort of trying to win from your hand. Right after the muscles do feel a bit more relaxed, and it should put everything back in place as well.

I'll try that exercise before I go to bed! I tried finding some online but could not find any definitive ones.

I clench my jaw frequently as well. I find it helps overall to take a moment of the day (usually at night in bed while you're already relaxed or trying to relax) to do some deep stretching of the jaw muscles. Try slowly opening your mouth as wide as possible, and then rotating your jaw from right to left and back again as far as it will go. I tend to do this several times when I remember, and I can usually feel it all the way up the side of my head if I've been clenching my jaw really hard.

It doesn't fully stop you from clenching your jaw unconsciously, but it does make you a little bit more mindful of the state of your muscles and it can help the pain and headaches that result.

Yeah, right now I am just trying to not clench. The internet said to keep your tongue between your teeth and that seems to be helping.

Question: What kind of doctor would you go to in order to get this diagnosed? Because this sounds very similar to what my daughter experiences off and on. We asked our dentist, but they didn't have any helpful information.

I think a dentist. And possibly more than one. Maybe a specialist?
