What are your favorite OCs and OC fanfics?

There's a Transformers fic for the Bayverse movies with an OFC...that they're hooking up with Mikaela, not Sam :D kudos to them for having excellent taste for their OC.

Does it count if the OCs aren't the main characters? Because I absolutely adore kidfic. A really good kidfic actually once got me into a pairing I had no interest in.

Oh yeah it's fine. Any fic with OCs is fine.

AYRT I am a sucker for even awful OCs if I get to read about couples I like raising kids. I once read a Johnlock fic, which I of course now remember almost nothing of, where John and Sherlock, through a series of events, somehow ended up parenting about four different children. All I really remember is that I greatly enjoyed it and that someone mistook John for the nanny.

There is one OC character I like from a Cabin Pressure fic. And he shows up in other people's fics!

I enjoyed the Dangerverse a lot, at least until the end that kind of ruined it. The first few fics of the series are still really good, though.

I really liked the first book in the Dangerverse! But then eventually they had adopted literally everyone and everyone had special powers and it all got a little weird, so I've never finished it. But I enjoyed Danger herself.

Yup. It got pretty unwieldy. I think it kind of got away from the author after a while. And the ending was just awful. But the first two are still quite good I think. And her three main OCs are also really good I think.

There was an OC named Roman in a FF7 fic, "A Long Hard Road". He was one of those characters who popped up to run messages for major characters and gradually built his place in the story through a series of those.

That's mostly how I think a lot of good OCs should go - start off with small support scenes and slowly build on them.

I could also list a ream of Raven's Blade characters who more or less had similar, though the best example I think is Shakurán, and Easterling commander who is Boromir's personal nemesis. The real development doesn't start appearing until the third fic and gradually sets him up until late in the fourth fic he ends up switching sides.

There was a wonderful M7 ATF fic where Ezra was great friends with this OC. I think Ezra/Chris were in a relationship or Chris wanted a relationship but Chris was jealous. The OC was this badass agent Ezra worked with before he was with the ATF. The fic talked up all the crazy amazing shit this OC did. The OC was also in this horrible (but heroic!) accident that left scars all over. The OC was described as having a gruff voice. Just someone Chris had a hard time comparing himself because the OC was a legend in the old department (FBI?).

Then comes the moment where Chris and the others meet the OC. The entire fic, you're meant to think the OC is a guy but it turns out it's this bad-ass, grizzled lady. Ezra is gay so Chris realizes there was nothing to worry about. Ezra and this lady are just BFFs, and she's just really cool. This leads to Chris/Ezra.

The fic was really well written to subvert expectations. You really do think it's a guy until the end, and the OC is really cool when you finally do meet her.

He's a little stressed out, but he's got his priorities straight. Original characters and London as a war zone, and John's accidentally inventing a super genius.

I love Uprooted! I haven't read How to Win Friends, though. :o

It could use better editing, but no particularly severe problems. There was a sequel started, but it's been abandoned for over a year.

Cultstuck is so good! Everyone has their shining moments and the OCs are all really great! Sadly the author seems to have moved on.

I'm really fond of all the OCs in the Portal story Blue Sky. All pretty much supporting characters, but very good ones, and used organically. Chell and Wheatley's character arcs couldn't have been done without them.

Pokemon's one of my favorite places to read OCs, one that comes to mind is a retelling of the Black/White plot called "Alphabet Soup." The main trainer is based on Hilda as far as her appearance and role in the plot goes, but she's a completely original character with a new name. All of her Pokemon are developed well, too. One of the best fics I've read based on a Pokemon game plot that wasn't a Nuzlocke.

That sounds similar to an OC stand in. Often a character made out of a minor character or throwaway name.

TBH I sort of prefer to use those myself because (and I know this probably sounds pathetic but) they don't carry quite the stigma of an OC. They're like an OC but you can point to something in canon to justify them.

I'm reading a Dragon Age fic called Looking Glass that's 90% OCs with only two or three canon characters, and it's all younger versions of those characters before they fully develop the personalities established in canon, so they're half OCs themselves, and I love it. My only regret is that they aren't canon and the headcanon explorations of lore built around them will probably be invalidated by the next game.
