I'm really annoyed by the shipping fandom of TFA. They are so obsessed with Stormpilot for some reason that I honestly think they have been bullying Boyega into liking it or the powers that be to somehow make it happen.

I wouldn't mind shipping it if they had more interaction in the movie, except for the fact that Finn/Rey is blatantly ignored despite having more of a foundation.

Omg don't you know? Finn was only asking if Rey had a boyfriend because he wants to date her boyfriend and he had like zero chemistry with her and slowing down gifs of Poe doing a reflexive lip bite makes them soooo much more canon Finn/Poe foreverrrrr X3

In all seriousness, I don't ship anything in TFA, but I find the fandom's immediate dismissal of Finn/Rey very strange.

Eh, I thought the Finn/Rey was very one-sided. Finn had an obvious crush, but Rey seemed platonically fond of him at best. The "stop holding my hand" bit helped put an early kibosh to any interest I might have had in the ship, as well.

Doesn't mean I consider Finn/Poe ~more canon, just that I'm not interested in shipping Finn/Rey.

(I was rather surprised that the fandom agreed with me; I don't usually ship the juggernaut pairing. Otoh, I really don't ship Kylo Ren/Hux or Kylo Ren/Rey, so my scrollbar still gets a workout.)

Doesn't stop stormpilot shippers from outright insisting Finn doesn't even have a crush on Rey or somehow interpreting his question about her having a boyfriend as him being gay. I suppose it's easier for you to ship characters (Poe hardly even counts as a character) who knew each other for 2 minutes and had barely any interaction than ones with a canon one-sided affection? Would you still have this mindset if Rey were male? Cuz I doubt it tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry some of us would prefer more lgbt presentation over another hetero pairing

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, that's why you're into it. And it's not like there's a huge disgusting racist outcry over the idea of a white woman hooking up with a black man within parts of the SW fandom. You're so noble, anon.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Right, they're so racist because they ship the black man with another man instead of a woman?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
No, but let's not pretend Finn/Rey is your average het ship and isn't subject to a lot of bashing from racists. Visit /tv/ on 4chan or IMDB sometime, kiddo.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
And what does that have to do with the people who ship Finn with Poe?

It's not like they have to ship Finn with somebody.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Stormpilot anon said they like it because they want LGBT representation, which is an average bullshit excuse from slash fangirls who just want to fap to buttsex. I'm pointing out Finn/Rey isn't exactly your standard het pairing (comes with its own brand of representation) and that the immediate dislike over it is highly questionable, especially since there's a vocal racist subset of the TFA fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a gay guy, we exist too. It's not just fangirls who want more representation.

Fandom as a whole is frequently racist, but the people cheerfully shipping the black dude are not part of the problem.

(Fandom as a whole is also frequently sexist, and I'm not as confident that that isn't a factor here. Otoh, Kylo Ren/Rey isn't that far behind Poe/Finn in popularity, and Poe/Finn/Rey is pretty popular, too. Even if some shippers are being motivated by sexism, there's still a lot of love to go around in TFA fandom.)

Not responding to the first sentence, which is obviously about other shippers rather than me.

I suppose it's easier for you to ship characters (Poe hardly even counts as a character) who knew each other for 2 minutes and had barely any interaction than ones with a canon one-sided affection?

In this case, definitely yes. While Poe's and Finn's interactions are low in time spent, they're high in emotional intensity. And a one-sided crush pings my shippy tendencies a lot less frequently than a mutually affectionate relationship (whatever that mutual relationship might be: romantic, friendship, frenemy, etc.).

Would you still have this mindset if Rey were male?

Maybe, maybe not. Otoh, I also might not have had this mindset if a different actress had played Rey, or if Ridley had played Rey slightly differently. (The "stop holding my hand" part, for instance. Ridley's tone of voice sounded exasperated to me, but if she'd said those lines with a different intonation, they might not have given me such strong anti-ship feels.) I don't think it's really possible to speculate; all I can say is that I don't ship the version of Rey and Finn that we got in TFA.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
Finn/Rey is het. Don't you know that het is evil. Het is boring. Het is not trendy.
