I got sleep paralysis with full blown hallucinations the other night and it's really fucking with my ability to go to sleep atm because I'm scared it's going to happen again and I don't want it.

That's scary. :(
I'm sorry you're dealing with that.

Do you think trying to sleep with an audiobook or some soft music on would make you more aware of where you are during that? That's my go-to for half asleep panic attacks.

I'm gonna try putting on some music tonight to see if that helps, my bf also offered up the same idea because he knows I tend to sleep better with some kind of noise going on in the room.

If nothing else it should help me relax enough to actually sleep.

Best of luck with the sleeping! I hope it's more restful this time.

I get this occasionally too. I find laying off the caffeine helps a lot.

I don't get it very often and most of the time I just can't move, so it's a little freaky but I can deal with it fine. This time though was just... no. I don't want that again.

I don't drink much caffeine normally but I might cut back a bit anyway because I do not want to go through that again, and even if it's more peace of mind I don't care, it'll help me relax I think.

I sure hope it helps. I find it really unpleasant even when it's just the can't move/heavy weight on you feeling. So far I have only had auditory hallucinations once and that made me want to nope right on out of my own head.

So yeah, I understand.

I totally feel you.

I get sleep paralysis from time to time and it is the absolute worst. It doesn't matter how much you tell yourself it's not real; in the moment, it's happening, and it's there, and it sucks.

I will say that I can usually get past it by meditating. Is that an option for you?

Yeah it is so damn freaky, not being able to move isn't great but I can deal with that mostly okay these days since I usually just need to close my eyes and drift off again so my body can wake up.

But this time was fucking awful so there was no calm 'just drift off and let it work itself out', I was kind of in a panic and went with the force myself awake route(which I find disorientating enough when I'm not scared as shit).

I'm not so good at meditating, can't clear my mind properly for it, but I think having some kind of noise going on might help in the future as it could help me figure out where I am.

Well, at least you've got a starting point as far as coping mechanisms go! Hopefully the sound thing works for you.

Does it always happen in the same place and room? That's how it was for me, and switching my room worked wonders. I have never had it since I gave up that bedroom.

Nope, different place/room each time. :(

There's no set pattern I can think of tbh, but I'm definitely gonna try herpy's less caffeine idea.

That sucks. I hope cutting down on caffeine helps. The only thing that doesn't suck about sleep paralysis is that it gives you plenty of weird stories to tell.

I would wake up and hear footsteps in the hall outside my bedroom door--even voices (or a voice) and someone running the water or peeing in the hall bathroom. The footsteps would get nearer and nearer to my door, and I'd think, this door isn't going to keep out anyone that really wants to get in, I have to open the window, take the screen out, climb out, and climb over the fence, and then I have to run like fuck, now, now, NOW. And I'd lie there and not be able to move. Finally I'd wake up for real.

IDK why it doesn't happen in the other room--which even opens onto the same hallway.

I've never had sleep paralysis, but my nightmares became much less intense when I started leaving a lamp on at night. I don't know if that will help, but I thought I might as well post it.

I do actually sleep with a night-light because I've never been good at sleeping in very dark rooms but lamps tend to be just that too bright for me to sleep with(unless I'm exhausted).

Thanks for the suggestion though. :)
