When do you feel that Shameless gets bad? I've watched the first three seasons and I found it really good (writing included), but I've been hesitating to start on S4 because I kind of got the feeling that it was about to hit that "cynical mess" phase some shows hit, where all the hopeful and beautiful things go out of the narrative and all that's left is this attitude like, "life is shitty and people are all shitty, there is just no end to the shittiness."

I don't want to spoil it if you still want to watch, I mean, I tried to stick with it. I really did. I was still invested in some characters. Things go to shit early on and get worse. My reactions were like

"what are you doing
WHAT ARE YOU DOING
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING"

but without the optimistic vibes from the earlier seasons.

That pretty much hits the nail on the head though. I feel like the writers were trying to spice things up and ended up just fucking everyone over. They're not the same characters to me. I was hoping things were going to turn around but from what I know about season 5 (haven't seen most of it) it just... doesn't. This is an opinion, and I'm sure lots of people still enjoy it.
