When I was little I told my dad I was scared of the fire alarm and fire drills at school, to see if he could do something to help me get over it. He didn't believe me because when there'd been a fire in the house across the street in the middle of the night, I slept through all the commotion.

He reasoned that there was no way I could be scared of a fire alarm if I could sleep through fire trucks across the street. And I didn't get it because why would I take the trouble to ask for help getting over a fear I didn't really have? (Looking at it now, he probably thought I did it for attention.)

That's not even sound reasoning. You sleep heavy so you sleep through a commotion, but a noise you can hear when you're awake can still scare you.

The fire alarms at school (and now at work) have always startled me, but once I get over the initial startle I'm fine.
