This just doesn't sit well with me. On a level where "Why does this character have to be black? I'm not racist! I have a black friend!" doesn't sit well with me either.

Hrm.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea where you are pulling that interpretation from.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't like MTF in fic but I am dating a MTF so it's okay I'm not a bad person or anything."

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
....But they would be perfectly within their rights to prefer not to date or read about trans women if they didn't want to? I'm a trans person myself and it's not "transphobia" if you prefer not to read about the specific tropes and crap that usually pops up in trans fics. I skip over a lot of it myself because of just that reason.

The only thing the secret says is that "it's not about hating trans women", which is a perfectly okay thing to want to get across. It sounds like OP may be a cis lesbian/bi/pan girl herself, and considering what a crappy reputation cis lesbians have concerning MtF women (and to some degree FtM guys, they regularly break them down to their vaginas all the while claiming they're still lesbians even though they're serially dating dudes) I can see why she(?) may want to separate herself from that. It's okay to like something in real life and not enjoy it in fiction.

To be honest I pretty much agree with secret!OP myself, unless the character is AMAB and presents femme I have a really hard time imagining someone like...I don't know, Rin from Free! being MtF or Saitama from One Punch Man (although believe it or not I did read a cute fic that dealt with this, but it was definitely OOC), but I could stretch my imagination and see FtM Rin (the reason I say "stretch my imagination" is because they're a bunch of teenage boys who run around shirtless half the time, and for a FtM guy to have top surgery at their age is pretty damn rare even in the States, and Japan treats trans people like it's still 1990) or FtM Saitama(...maybe? I haven't thought about it before, truthfully I could see FtM Genos more easily).

Repeat after me, it's OK to prefer dudes (cis or trans) in your fiction. And it's OK to like trans fiction (fan or otberwise); it's still a largely untapped well of story potential.

It's not OK to be skeevy about real trans people or put women beneath men in real life but there's nothing here that suggests you do that.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's also OK to not like trans fiction. Or any kind of fiction because it's made up.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking this.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is a good comment.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
makes sense to me. turning male presenting characters into mtf basically disregards their gender expression and possibly their self-identification.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
DA

That's what bothers me about it. They're presenting male on the show and then people headcanon them as MtF and my brain gonks.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
NA

Yeah, as a trans person that's why I personally do kind of the same thing as the secret!OP (except I'll gladly read MtF headcanons if I feel an AMAB character actually presents en-femme and shows signs of being trans, otherwise I prefer my MtF headcanons to generally be about female characters assumed "cis", because I feel like I avoid the problematic "trap" trope entirely that way), and I feel exactly like AYRT. I feel like you're purposely twisting their gender expression. When it's obvious a character's gender identity is male I find it actually kind of creepy (not in a "I judge people who do this" way, just personally) to make them MtF because I feel like you're deliberately taking their male gender expression and identity away from them.

THEY ARE FICTIONAL. Why can't fictional people be living as one gender but not yet out or transitioning to a different gender like, IDK, the actual people who do the same for safety, cost, or other personal concerns?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
because the focus on an aspect of trans ppls lives that a lot of them arent SUPER HAPPY ABOUT seems really fetishistic when fiction is primarily an escapist fantasy

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really like reading about stuff for pre-transition characters anyway. It seems to come across as way more of a sissification kink than actually wanting to explore a character being trans. Same if you only headcanon a guy as trans so he can get pregnant and have babies for your pregnancy kink.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
What do you mean by 'sissification'? I've only ever run across this in the MtF context. Are you talking about MtF or trying to say trans men are part of the sissification kink? o.O I'm...not sure if I'm reading that right but that sounds kind of...not good to me. I've never seen trans male characters suddenly act feminine or anything just because people headcanon them as trans.

Oh and what? Ew people actually headcanon guys as trans for pregnancy kink??! Thankfully this is something I've never, ever run across. Usually I see authors at least semi-aware of trans issues and they realize how dysphoric being pregnant would make like 98% of trans guys.

*Shrug* Ever since I saw an Oprah story about "the world's first pregnant man" I've kind of had a thing for FtM pregnancy. That real couple was fine with doing it and I don't think we're only allowed to enjoy or write fiction about individuals if it conforms to the perceived majority of a group.

What about a headcanon that a character who is already female-presenting is MtF? Is it changing the way the character presents that's the problem--maybe you feel like the way the character presents on the show is their authentic identity, and a lot of FtM ones keep that identity while MtF ones change it? That's understandable to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but I feel this way. I'm cis, but I'm fine with fics where a character is trans as long as they stay as their canonical gender (for instance, a presumably cis boy turns into a trans boy or a presumably cis girl turns into a trans girl). I'm not interested in reading fics where a male character on the show is turned into a trans girl. I think the problem is a lot of times it seems rather stereotypical like "oh this boy is too effeminate to be a real boy so he has to be genderfluid/a trans girl/whatever."

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not Secret!OP but yeah, that's what I'm betting the problem is, it almost always is when I see this issue come up in fandom, because a lot of the male characters in canon that get turned into trans female characters, it's usually for really stereotypical reasons, or fandom gets something stuck in their craw about "subverting stereotypes" so they'll pick the most masculine, manly character there is in any given series and turn him into a trans woman. Both things ring kind of false to me. There isn't nearly as much of presumed cis female characters being headcanoned as trans out there for some reason though, which sucks, because I totally have MtF headcanons for several female characters. I feel like keeping characters as their original gender identity in canon helps not to get into a ton of problematic tropes that come with trans fiction.

Sporty?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
You mean like how Caitlyn Jenner used to play football in high school and college and was an Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete? Sporty like that?

Shaming?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, what is with you people? I'm betting ten to one you're a cis anon and just want to make people feel bad like I'm betting 90% of the weird shaming tactics are in this thread tbh. We're not talking about Caitlyn Jenner and her crappy self here (god seriously keep up with the times she's a shitty role model for trans people and every time I see someone hold her up like some progressive thing I want to scream into the void that the old, obscenely rich white lady who couldn't be less in touch with the trans community if she tried is NOT a rep for the community), we're talking about fictional characters, who we only have a finite amount of information on, and who we glean personality, motivation, and motives from the canon we watch.

When a character has an obvious male gender identity in canon, I can absolutely see why someone would prefer for them to be FtM rather than MtF. Not to mention the secret anon gives absolutely no indication about the other media she consumes. She could be reading MtF/cis lesbian novels out the wazoo because she feels they capture her relationship better. (It's what an ex of mine did!) Maybe she watches trans-friendly lesbian porn?

Who the fuck are all of you to judge her on one aspect of her entertainment consumption like she's some horrible devil for preferring trans men instead of trans women in what is in all likelihood a slash dominated environment? What the actual hell? If anything I think it's freakin' great. It's stopping the disgusting fetishization of trans women I noticed happening a few years ago within the yaoi community because they were girls, but they had a dick and not an icy vagina so it was totes cool guiz~

Wow. Just. Wow. This community drives me insane sometimes.

Could you, by chance, be radfem anon?

The writing is a lot more coherent but the righteous fury is about the same.

ayrt

I wasn't shaming or, at least, I wasn't trying to. I was just trying to point out a real-life example of MtF who was sporty (however you feel about Jenner, she is trans and, in my opinion, extremely sporty). What you show to the world on the outside doesn't necessarily match up with how you feel on the inside. OP is perfectly free to like and dislike whatever they choose, but "feels wrong" just didn't sit right with me. Sorry that I upset you.
