Re: Why would anyone not a racist, classist xenophobe vote for Donald Trump?

Idk, people I thought would never in a million years go for that asshole are saying they'll vote for him, and people I would have pegged as the types to go to his events are going 'hell no.' It's a strange situation. Every person I know who could be tabbed as 'establishment' (local politicians, but respected in their sphere) is running around like a headless chicken trying to rally the troops against him, all without stepping on anybody's toes.

Me, I'm voting for Kasich tomorrow. If Trump gets the nomination, I'm gonna write-in my vote, pick up some beer, ammo, and kitty chow, and the cat and I are heading out west. When the nation descends into lawless chaos, I'll become a bounty hunter or something.

I'm surprised at your opposition, seeing how widely republicans have embraced him. This is just republicans being republicans same as they've always been.

I'm not Republican but even I know that's untrue.

That's like saying Bernie is Democrat like Democrats have always been.

Bernie and Trump are both outsiders that have their respective parties panicking because the DNC and RNC have no control over them. This is really appealing to Trump voters for the same reason Bernie is appealing to Bernie voters.

Did you miss where the national Republican paper dedicated a whole issue to taking down Trump? Or how Republican officials left and right denounce him?

Re: Why would anyone not a racist, classist xenophobe vote for Donald Trump?

There might be some truth to that. On the other hand, he's been widely embraced by the Republican base, and I think at a certain point you have to ask: what is the Republican Party? Is it the grandees and the pundits who get published in tony magazines? Or is it the people who actually vote and have beliefs and opinions and support or reject the actual candidates? I think the latter are more important. And, again, those people are the ones who have embraced Trump, and what he stands for and what he says - not only embraced him, but decided that he's far more important than the traditional leaders of the party. Those are the people who have been the Republican Party while believing these things, and they are the people who are still the Republican Party. The Trump people and the Cruz people.

But whatever you think of that argument, there's also certainly an element of truth in the idea that I'm just fucking with Iceyred

My family's all LibDems, but my grandfather watches all the coverage and he says that Kasich is actually the sanest of the Republican candidates. You guys seriously have a bad lot this time around. I rarely agree with Republican candidates but this year seems to be particularly ridiculous. I have yet to hear a single good thing about either Trump or Cruz.

Re: Why would anyone not a racist, classist xenophobe vote for Donald Trump?

He really is. If I had to vote for a Republican candidate, it'd be him, hands down. All the other candidates in that party just scare me way too much.

The funny thing about Cruz is that even people in his own party can't stand him. But Jeb's campaign is floundering, Kasich did come in second in New Hampshire, but who knows how long his momentum will last, nobody seems to really care about Carson anymore, especially given all the really weird things he's been known for saying in recent months, and Rubio is kind of a question mark, at this point.

So as of now, the party seems to be left with either Cruz or Trump as their nominee, and.the GOP establishment wouldn't want either one as their pick for different reasons. Trump makes their party look bad and Cruz is just flat out despised all around.

I'm not a Republican, so watching the party flounder is amusing to me in a lot of ways, but I do feel for the more moderate/sane Republicans all the same. They surely must be thinking, "This is the best you guys have to offer us? Really?"

If I had to vote for a Republican candidate, it'd be him, hands down.

That's my grandfather's take on it. We joked that he would be a good candidate because I've never even heard of him, which means he MUST be a good guy because I can't go five seconds without hearing about something stupid Trump or Cruz has done.

I haven't even heard Republicans say anything good about Cruz, and that exhausts my knowledge on the party.

I like to think that Trump won't win because his voters are the vocal minority, but the bottom line is there are people who will vote for him because they don't want a woman, or they don't want someone Jewish, or they will just always vote Republican.

I feel bad for all the people who just want good Republican representatives, but at the same time watching this campaign is terrifying for me, because the idea of Trump as president is nothing but horror to me.

You've heard about Trump (and Cruz) because they say and do outrageous things and the media laps that up like the good little puppies they are. Who wants to report on sensible and adult behavior? That doesn't bring in ratings and it doesn't generate comment wars on social media. The media is giving free advertising to men who will ensure wave after wave of destruction for the news anchor. To it's credit, the establishment is trying to stem the tide, but when all the entire media system is putting it's energies towards pushing forward two buffoons, it's an upward battle.

Basically. Trump got so popular because A) He's an imbecile and liberals, myself included, will talk about him because WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, and B) By being an imbecile he appeals to the kind of people who think he's just 'telling it like it is' and those people are also quite loud.

As I understand it, Kasich is a very conservative Roman Catholic, which is probably a bad fit for the USA.

He's done some questionable stuff in Ohio. I don't remember exactly; denying benefits to counties that voted Democrat and keeping them in place for counties that voted Republican?

One of the economics bloggers I read dislikes him for being a hard-money guy, which might be a problem in the present economic climate.

But yes, he does seem relatively sane, to damn with faint, faint praise.

Someone else said he was also pushing to further restrict abortion in Ohio.

I don't know enough about financial issues.

'Relatively sane' is about all I can hope for out of the Republican party this year.

I want to like Kasich, but his policies in Ohio have been so very anti-abortion. Making abortions harder to get and more expensive even for people whose babies would be stillborn doesn't help anyone.

Yeah, my grandfather seems to like him in the 'if I absolutely HAD to have a republican' kind of sense.

I honestly don't expect any kind of pro-choice motions from the republican side. Hell, I don't even really expect it from democrats.
