I'll give a pass on things like "rapist" or stuff that denote an <b<active action</b> (being rich doesn't count as an active action unless that person made themselves rich. People are often born into it.) but otherwise. Yuck.

Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answer?

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know the answer, which is why I'm asking you.

Some people find openly rich people obnoxious, others find rich people who claim they're not rich obnoxious, some people find both obnoxious... which is worse?

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
...what

There's nothing wrong with being rich, so I'm not sure why someone being "openly rich" is bad... do you mean, they constantly flaunt their richness and brag and are generally insufferable about all the money they have? And "middle class" really depends on a lot of circumstances, there's no clear cut definition. Yeah, someone who makes a million dollars or more a year probably shouldn't be calling themselves middle-class, that's obnoxious, but there's not one good definition (especially since cost of living varies so much depending on the area).

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Ah yeah sorry I should have made it more clear it's about flaunting wealth. It was supposed to be two types of obnoxious people, which is worse.

I kinda think the second type is worse? Idk, I might feel uncomfortable around someone who flaunted their wealth, but people that don't even understand how good they have it are exhausting to be around (additionally to it still being potentially somewhat uncomfortable).

(Story Time: A friend of mine once went on a date and at the end of the movie the guy wanted to leave the snacks behind, despite them not being finished, and she was really shocked by this. They talked about it and she was like, I probably don't do things like that because my family was really poor growing up and he answered with "My family also isn't rich at all, my Dad just makes 60k a year." And idk this level of ignorance is just to much for me personally.)

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't 60k accurately middle class? The median was 55 or something like that.

Or maybe you're not in the US?

What region do you live in? Over in the San Francisco Bay, I wouldn't call anyone who makes 60K rich.

I hate to break it to you, but around here 60K/year is distinctly middle class. It's not rich.

Re: What's worse...

It really depends. If you're a billionaire and think you're middle class, I would call that delusional, and would much prefer someone being openly rich.

On the other hand, some people don't actually don't know how well off they actually are, for instance if they have been brought up quite modestly with rich parents, and might insist on being middle class while actually having millions in the bank (The wealthiest person I know was quite shocked when she turned 18 and got full access to all her bank accounts, she genuinely believed that was maybe upper middle class, when in actuality she was way beyond that).

There's also the fact that the definition of being rich is something that varies extremely depending on who you ask.

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that was pretty much me. Hit 18, got access to the trust fund, nearly had a fucking heart attack. I was aware that the family had money (for one, we never had any worries about how I was going to pay for college, anywhere), but we didn't have Rich People Cars or vacation homes in the Hamptons or whatever, so I thought we were solidly upper-middle class.

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
This. I had no idea how much money my parents had in stocks and accounts and such until I was a young adult because we've always lived modestly - we have a small house, our cars are about ten years old, and we've never bought expensive brand-name things or gone on fancy vacations. I honestly thought we were just middle class because that's how we'd always lived.

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
By "insists they're middle class" do you mean someone who just pretends not to be rich and says they're middle class only if they need to say anything about it, or do you mean someone who refuses to believe they're rich and insists they're only middle class?

I don't care if people are rich or don't want to live a lifestyle that shows they're rich or don't want to admit to it. I would have a problem with someone who clearly is rich who refuses to believe they aren't, since that implies they don't understand how the majority of people live.

The latter kind, the ones who go "I make $300,000/yr that's upper middle class!"

A rich person who insists they're middle class.

Of course, most of us on this forum are probably in the top 1 or 2 percent of the world. http://www.globalrichlist.com/

I have no idea how to answer that question. I don't even know where I land in the whole rich/upper middle class/middle class spectrum.

Husband is a pilot for a commuter airline making about twice the US median income. I stay home with our one kid. House is paid for. Four automobiles (to be fair, Hubby actually built two of them from the ground up), a motor home (also to be fair, it was made in 1976), and a Cessna (four-seater) are paid for. We pay cash for literally everything and don't live beyond our means. We shop at Walmart.

Are we rich? I had someone laugh at me when I told them that I thought I was solidly upper-middle-class and tell me I was barely middle class, which was ridiculous, though maybe they were using California standards (which is why I will never ever live in California).

I don't know. We're well-off, certainly. But part of that is because we were dirt poor when we first got married and got used to living that way. So I don't "insist" on anything; I genuinely do not know. We're just... us.

The second because they're a liar I guess, but I don't particularly begrudge people their riches per se. I do care if they do things like tax evasion etc.

Both sound kind of gross in my opinion. The former sounds like they're bragging and rubbing it in your face, while the letter is just trying to put up a modest front but is secretly judging you.

Eh, I guess the former is the lesser of two evils. At least you know where you stand with that one.

The latter.

Middle class people who insist they're impoverished are worse and more common than both of those imo.
