Politics Thread

Behind A Cut because I know how exhausting and awful these conversations are

Apparently Sanders supporters were chanting "English only" while Dolores Huerta was trying to provide a Spanish translation of something to do with the Nevada caucus?

That seems... incredibly shitty and not at all the kind of thing that Democrats ought to be doing?

Meanwhile, Hillary supporters allegedly had people posing as NNU.

I'd like to see some evidence of it.

Dolores Huerta confirmed it on her own Twitter: http://www.bustle.com/articles/143153-america-ferreras-shocking-claim-about-bernie-sanders-supporters-is-making-waves

It's worth noting there's no confirmation as to whether they were actual Bernie supporters or just random assholes in the crowd.

Says a celebrity Hillary supporter with nothing backing it up.

Arguable, but I actually never said she lied. She could also have just been WRONG.

Apparently that got exaggerated in the telling.

.@AmericaFerrera I was there. Nobody frm Bernie's side said English only. Moderator did when no neutral translator was found@DoloresHuerta

I don't think I can vote for Hillary Clinton.

I know, I know, if she wins the general and I don't vote for her, it's theoretically casting a vote for a Republican white house. Even so. I am considering switching parties and voting Kasich or Trump if it comes down to it.

I honestly don't think it makes a difference. After the new emails where she was arguing against after promising to stand up for them in 2008, I can't trust Clinton to keep any of her promises, achievable or not, so what does it matter what promises she makes? What does it matter if she fakes nice until she's in the seat of power? Isn't an enemy you know, better than an enemy you can't predict?

Oh my god why would you vote for Trump

Re: Politics Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not? It's a shitshow and most of his proposals are too stupid for Congress to pass. It's bluster and won't happen for real.

I feel far more secure that dumb shit like an impossible, unfundable wall between the US and Mexico will never be built, than Cruz trying to implement incremental "religious freedom" reforms.

:( Hilary is a solid candidate, though. Trump is like, the anti-christ. He's even gotten criticism from the Pope.

Re: Politics Thread

I'm sick of Hillary supporters trying to brand anyone who supports Sanders as an MRA. I'm also offput by her apparent willingness to say that because I have a vagina I am duty bound to support her. I object to being told that abortion rights are the only valid political concern right now, and that Sanders would somehow ignore abortion rights entirely. Hillary is doing a lot to make it hard for me to support her, all her platform seems to do is tell me what I should be thinking and insult me if I disagree.

If she does get the nomination, and it seems likely even without having to resort to superdelegate shenanigans, I don't really want to endorse her bid. I won't against her, because Trump is insane and Cruz is insaner (Trump wouldn't know what to do with the presidency since just getting it is the ego stroker he wants, but Cruz is a true believer in his insanity), but I don't think I could vote for her in clear conscience either. I think I'll sit this election out and just hope the next one throws up better candidates.

Don't forget there's a good chance Hillary gets indicted before she gets in the White House. She has 3 or 4 FBI investigations going on her right now. The Democratic party may end up with no nominee at all.

Re: Politics Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That is true. Whoever Hillary picks as VP is probably going to finish her term.

Re: Politics Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think HRC understands just how unpopular she is on both sides. She won't turn the Dem base out, they just are not excited by her, but she will get the GOP voters out to uncritically support whoever runs against her. Large turn out for the GOP< low turn out for the Dems, that is not a happy equation.

I think it's an important distinction to make that Hillary's surrogates are the ones saying stuff about "a special place in hell"; Hillary herself is not, in much the same way that Bernie's supporters and surrogates often say things that Bernie himself would not.

I also do think there's stuff to her platform other than abortion rights. But I agree that she makes it hard to support her. She can't stop tripping over herself, she can't really communicate in a positive way as much as I would like, and her instinct whenever she gets in trouble is to run to the center, which is both dumb and bad. I hope she can figure that shit out soon because Jesus am I getting worried here.

Re: Politics Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No. No no no no no. Her surrogates say it and when she's given the opportunity to apologize for them or tell them to stop, she says people are just too offended these days. This is implicit endorsement of what they are saying.

Stop apologizing for Hillary. There is no distinction.

I'll vote for Hillary if I have to, but I'll probably hold my nose. I'm just not a fan of attempted political dynasties--wasn't a fan with George Bush 1 and 2 and now Jeb, although he's fizzling fast. Basically the only reasons I'd have for voting Clinton is she's not Trump or Cruz, she's nominally a Democrat, and she's female and we'd have a female president. But I'm sick of voting for the lesser evil, she's very definitely an establishment politician, and the undercurrent of "women stick together (because I want your vote)" being put out by some of her supporters creeps me out. Like, yes, we both have vaginas and ID as female. So does Sarah Palin.

I teach high school students, and one of the males in class said, "I wouldn't vote for Hillary because she'd try to get us in war once a month," and most of the other boys laughed at his joke. It really bothered me that I teach in a very conservative school district because I wanted to tell him that I was sure that Hillary has reached menopause and apparently they didn't know how female bodies worked.

I'm sure they'll all vote for Trump anyway. I voting for whoever wins the Democratic nomination.

She might in truth do that, though periods have nothing to do with it and money does.
