How should I choose?

I'd at least pick the pregnant girl; she may give birth to the Chosen One who will save them all.

Also, technically that means you are guaranteed to save another person, if the baby makes it.

I love these kinds of morality questions.

But man, there are some shit combinations in this. Like...this group is not repopulating the world or even surviving very long. Also, not enough detail given about each person.

idk why but I'm laughing at "confirmed racist." It's CONFIRMED.

I feel like it's not out of the ordinary to go some places and ask someone and get a shrug and a "yeah i'm racist."

Confirmed racist but against who? If everyone is black it makes no difference and there's no race indication for any of them besides the black guy...

Here's why:

I love hypotheticals. These are really, really lame hypotheticals.

Why are we assuming the pregnant high school dropout has a low IQ? That's a fucking lazy stereotype.

One guy is black (why is his race relevant and nobody else's?) and also a militant? Black militants are an issue for our doomsday scenario? Is it 1970?

We know nothing about the prostitute except that she's almost 40 and retired. Unless we're doing some kind of weird damaged goods scenario?

If the architect is a guy, why are we assuming he can't squirt in a cup?

And you know what? Your prof probably didn't write this, because it's too fucking dated. Your prof is lazy and copied this from somebody.

I assume the black guy's race is relevant purely because of the "confirmed racist" doctor, who may otherwise be a viable partner for him, though her race isn't given and I suppose we're supposed to assume it's white, which makes the whole thing sort of racist, doesn't it?

Also re: the homosexual: if it were up to him to help repopulate the human race maybe he'd have sex with one or more women? But your response is really good and made me lol. Excellent point.

The last line - profs recycle stuff all the time, I don't get why that makes them lazy? If they see an exercise they think is good they may use it. (even if others don't think it's good)

I do think this feels rather dated, but I still found it interesting.

I recycle stuff whenever I'm lucky enough to teach two of the same class--but I recycle GOOD, UP TO DATE stuff.

It'd be like a political exercise that assumes Obama was just elected. Using it for a couple years? Great! Using it now? Fucking lazy.

Ahhh, okay. I see what's going on here.

You're supposed to choose based on which group of six people will most effectively be able to carry on the human race. But you also can't choose people who are going to theoretically kill each other. I'm betting the key to getting a good grade on the assignment is to build the team that survives the apocalypse, not the one based on moral decisions (ie. don't write off the racist just because they're a racist or the homosexual just because they're a homosexual).

Therefore, just find the group with the least conflicts.

Right away, this gives me: The female student + unborn child = 2, the female physician (3), the violinist (4), the prostitute (5), and the homosexual (6).

There are certainly other combinations you could make, but there you have it.

There is no "right" answer. Now do your own homework.

Here's how I'd go about it:

(1) You have to pick the pregnant girl because you know she's fertile
(2) Then you have to pick the doctor so she can make sure the babies survive.

Now, someone's got to give that girl more babies. The physician will hate black babies, so the black dude's out. We don't know how old the architect is, but it probably doesn't matter. He has a useful skill and if he can't manage to have sex with the girl, maybe the doctor can use him as a sperm donor.

(3) So we pick the architect.

No one else has particularly useful skills. The former prostitute may be able to have more babies.

(4) So we pick the prostitute. She can also have some architect babies.

The law students may not have rebuild-the-human-race skills, but they're at least likely to be smart and can also have kids. The wifey may be a bit unstable, but you have to take the pair. Male law student also may come in handy in case the architect can't get the other women pregnant.

(5) Male law student
(6) Female law student

Mine was similar to yours. I picked the young black guy over the architect but was otherwise the same. My logic:

1. Teenager + baby = already we have one baby, plus like you said she's fertile, AND she's young so she can have lots more babies
2. Doctor because she was one of only three women in the group and you have to maximize female fertility in order to maximize the overall fertility of a group - I didn't even think of your reasoning but I should have, though I did think her intelligence would be a plus in general.
3. Prostitute because again, another uterus. In hindsight, though, maybe I should have swapped her out for someone (probably the architect, like you, since he has a useful skill and is probably also smart) because at 39 she's not going to have very many more babies. Again though - female fertility...but having another male who can father more children than she can bear might do more to maximize genetic variety in this case, not sure. So I guess those two are a tossup. I left him out initially because homosexuality = not likely to have kids, but you and Chard made good points about him being a sperm donor, and honestly, he could even be a conventional father if he wanted to. (In hindsight, I thought there were only three women but I guess there are four, so that leans me more towards your choice, actually)
4. Young black guy because he's young and fertile and probably horny. Presumably if they're all fighting for survival he won't be so stupid as to try to hurt others. (I don't trust the policeman this far because he's acted out violently before. Simply saying someone is "militant" isn't as big of an indicator to me. Plus he's young and the power dynamic would be different; the cop would be a greater threat to stability.) I'm sure the doctor, assuming she is racist towards black people (I think that's supposed to be implied), can get over herself with the survival of the human race at stake. Ideally all possible partners would pair up at some point but if she can't bring herself to he's still got two other potential partners. (I can see him hooking up with the teen; they're close in age, both young and both probably horny and fertile.)
5. and 6. the lawyer couple - again young and fertile *and* probably already having sex so that makes it easier. We don't know why she's been sedated/mentally ill but we hope it's not something genetic since a post-apocalyptic situation isn't good for that sort of thing, but a young available uterus is too good to pass up, and a young available pair of balls doesn't hurt either.

one last thought - I could also see using the violinist over the architect just in terms of reproductive potential, though you are right that the architect has more useful skills for survival

From a purely practical standpoint, I'd pick the same ones you did, anon.

Save no one. If the human race got to the point where we created doomsday, why should we get to repopulate? We're obviously a plague on the planet. Just let us die out for christs sake.
