I genuinely think she's one of the best singer-songwriters of our generation. Not the 'best of all time' or even the very best right now, but definitely ONE of the best.

S!B Taylor is generally viewed as useless and fluffy.

Hey, OP. I'm the Taylor Swift fan who left that long comment upthread. Since you are such a fan, I thought it might be fun to ask you what your favorite TS songs are. Top five? Top ten? Or you can go higher than that if you want.

If you're interested, that is. I just like hearing about other people's favorite songs from particular artists, and seeing how they're similar and different from my own. :)

Any other TS fans are welcome to list their favorites as well.

Blerg, missfire

I think her more recent work is amazing, but the stuff she did earlier in her career... eh. Ranges from mediocre to total crap.

Hopefully twenty years from now she'll be remembered for "Blank Space" and not "Love Story"!

To be fair, her earliest work was written when she was sixteen. And it shows. But it's not bad for a teenager. I think she just gets better and better every album.

Eh, maybe. But how many serious contenders can this generation claim?

Ariana Grande, for the whistle register.

Lady Gaga, because despite what people say about her, she can actually sing.

Anyone else?

I finally warmed up to her a little bit with her latest album. I'm still not a fan, but she's finally coming across in her music as a self-aware, mature, worldly adult. Which is a huge step up from her old persona of 'grown-ass woman desperately trying to convince the world she's an innocent clueless frumpy country-gurl teenager'.

1989 made a lot of people reconsider her. If she releases more albums like it, I think people will start to recognize her as being a serious talent.

'grown-ass woman desperately trying to convince the world she's an innocent clueless frumpy country-gurl teenager'

That bothered me less than 'grown ass incredibly rich and privileged beyond your wildest dreams woman trying to convince the world she's a sad teenager just like you'.

To each their own. She has a really hard time hitting the right notes when she can't count on pitch correction in post, but I can see why her lyrics resonate with so many.

I actually haven't heard her live, but I have heard that she's not as good, which is a shame. But I can't really get too upset because I haven't really heard anyone that sounds even half as good live. The benefit of post-production I guess.

because in the big industry, it's more about the face than the talent.

I admit I haven't sat down and listened to her latest stuff but she's just never done it for me on the singing front. Songwriting, yes, she's got some talent there. She's just never impressed me on the actual performance of things.

Maybe try listening to some musicians outside the mainstream box. You might change your mind.

Honestly, as catchy as some of the tunes are, I'm not that terribly impressed by her. I understand being into her music since there aren't really a whole lot of gems in the mainstream these days, but it's not like she's doing anything that hasn't already been done before.

I think she's very talented, but most of her music still annoys me, or bores me at best. There's a grand total of one song of hers that's gotten popular that I enjoy, and since I dislike all the rest of her popular stuff, I'm not really inclined to go looking for the less-known songs.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think you have a good point. Just because her target audience is young (and female - as is she) doesn't mean she automatically sucks. And most likely she will continue to grow as an artist, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think she has phenomenal skill as a writer of country-pop and full-on pop music. I'm actually a little bit in awe of her, in that regard. And I say that as someone who mostly likes the kind of under-produced folk/indie/rock that tends to be regarded as "genuinely good art."

Pop isn't really my scene. I mean sure, I'll rock out to Gaga's "Bad Romance" or Pink's "Blow Me One Last Kiss" any old time, but pop is more of a side dish than a main course for me. Probably 95% of the pop songs I hear on the radio bore me. And yet Taylor Swift...fuck can that woman write a hit pop song like nobody's business. I've always loved what Jody Rosen from Rolling Stone said about her, which is that she has "an intuitive gift for verse-chorus-bridge architecture."

Is Swift anywhere near my favorite song writer? ...I don't think so? My MP3 player was on shuffle one day, and Bush's song "Straight No Chaser" came on immediately after Swift's "All Too Well," and it was jarring how much more raw and devastating the emotion in Bush's song was - despite the fact that I consider "All To Well" to be pretty near masterful in its own right, and I consider "Straight No Chaser" quite flawed, musically.

And maybe you don't like "Straight No Chaser," but whatever you like, you're bound to have a song that - when juxtaposed with one of Swift's best - cuts so much deeper. Which for me is the interesting conundrum of Swift's song writing: I would find it difficult to overstate how talented I believe she is in her ability to write a specific kind of song - the kind that keeps a lot of people on the hook for repeat listens without burning them out. A song that cuts just deep enough and no deeper. A song that isn't particularly challenging, but also isn't stupid. A song that is genuine enough, but where the emotions and images are all a bit cinematic, idealized.

As far as her singing goes...well, without the help of auto tune, I'd say she's barely passable. And yet the funny thing is that I'd rather listen to Swift sing her own songs badly, than listen to almost anyone else singe her songs well (exempting Ryan Adams, lol). Because she's emotive about them; she sings them - to the best of her ability - how she means them to feel.

I don't find any to be a singer of the generation but her music is enjoyable and catchy! Look forward to more songs.

Personally, I'd love to see her stop singing and performing, which she really can't do well, and become a full time songwriter.

I'm with ya, OP.

i don't think she's a good singer but she's a talented songwriter and extremely clever. if nothing else, you've got to admire her hustle and how well she markets herself.
