Store names, places, and words you assumed were something different

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine below (also as an example).

A friend and I were just talking about how we both had assumed the store Anthropologie had something to do with, well, anthropology. I was thinking it was cultural/ancient-style clothing, and/or Free Trade stuff; she'd thought it was something along those lines, maybe artifacts as well. Nope. It's super expensive clothing that has nothing to do with any of those things.

I thought RENT took place in the 1800s - my guess is that I heard of RENT being based on La Boheme. In any case, I was really confused when the trailer came out and it was modern people doing modern things, and assumed it was a modern version of RENT.

I thought Hell's Kitchen was either a baking reality TV show or a really grim horror. I didn't know it was an actual place.

I first heard about Hell's Kitchen from Daredevil, and assumed it was a totally made-up place. Like his version of Gotham, or something.

It is a cooking reality show too, so you weren't entirely wrong!

Me too! I figured it was either a horror movie or the name of a restaurant.

there should be a grim horror called Hell's kitchen. I'd watch it.

Rutter's Farm Store - has a weird 'R' that looks like almost any other letter...

Samsonite - the luggage company - were licensed to produce LEGO products for a while. I wouldn't have expected it.

I used to think "Baklava" was the name of a city in Russia, not a dessert.

At least you're not like me that gets it confused with a balaclava...

I know what baklava is, it's one of my favorite desserts. What the hell is a balaclava?

and - at least based on the ones by me - are all shit.

Also they don't even sell that many coats, and the ones they do are gonna go Sam Vimes boot theory on you fast.

Then why are they called that??

Honestly I'll never get over the terribly disappointing coat I online-ordered from them as a naive college freshman.

Because they originated as an outerwear outlet store. But you do more year-round business if you sell other clothes too, rather than primarily winter coats.

The ones nearest to me aren't even called "Coat Factory" anymore, just Burlington! Perhaps they rebraded because people think they only sell coats. Or maybe it's that we Southern Californians don't have the highest demand for heavy-duty winter coats!

I was very surprised when I couldn't find a coat I liked and went there thinking "Okay. Coat." and I walked in and there was tons of stuff that wasn't coats. I didn't get a coat that day.

That story ended on a truly sad note. Did you get a coat later? :(

The signs for The Bay department store all have this weird B that - to my twelve-year-old mind - looked a lot like a hand written capital G. So I spent a while envisioning the sign as saying "The Gay." I knew the story wasn't called that, but that's what I saw whenever I looked at the sign.

Also, when I was a little kid, all the signs for Coles book stores actually read "COLES the book people." But for some reason I always read it as "CLOSE the book people," like they were telling you to close the book you were looking at, which seemed a pretty weird way to sell books.
