Re: Gender thread

A real irritant for me is when people use a gendered word for a non-gendered profession, if it's a woman doing the job.

You don't see so much of it these days. I personally go out of my way to say "actor" in a gender neutral way when possible, and I glare at anyone who said "authoress" or "aviatrix."

Just...no.

Bonus: I bet if they could, these people would invent the term "doctorette!"

Aviatrix is a hella cool word, though.

This. I love gendered Latin endings for exactly that reason.

Consider: a sleight-of-hand artist is a prestidigitator. However, if she's a woman, she's a prestidigitatrix.

And if she has a lady friend in the same line of work they are, together, prestidigitatrices.

I cannot be upset about anything that makes me smile that widely. I'm sorry.

I was a huge fan of "gladiatrix" - damn like, if you'd walk in with a sword, that word alone could make you feel powerful.

This. I wanna learn to fly and wear a scarf and leather jacket and be an aviatrix!

It's fine that you feel that way. But I don't. If I ever learned to fly (and that would be so cool!) I would like to be a pilot, an aviator, anything that describes my training and ability without bringing gender into it.

I'm glad other people think this too!

When my parwnts were putting affairs together, my mom asked which of us wanted to be the executrix to their will. I dwclined just on the stupidity o the name.

But do you avoid saying "dominatrix?"

"Dominator" just doesn't have the same implications, IMO.
