Beggars

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I am so fucking sick of those people who beg for money on Tumblr because they are about to be kicked out of their home or some other bullshit.

It is always the same sobs story I am just supposed to believe. But I saw one that just took the fucking cake.

This person and her friend need $4000 to find a new home since they can't live with their grandma any more. The friend has a family that is totally emotionally abusive. You just have to believe them. This family HATES the friend so much they offered to buy a ticket for her so she doesn't have to live on a street.

But, not only do they need money they can't have a roommate OR live in an apartment with someone on top. Someone living above them would stress them out so much they would commit suicide (they said that).

And then they end with "And if we don't get this money my friend will go home and kill herself."

Fuck you. Fuck your guilt tripping. Grow the fuck up and get a therapist, a job and/or disability.

To be fair, it's not that easy. While yes, the begging and guilt-tripping is reprehensible, if they're truly mentally ill, it might not be that easy to get (or keep) a job. Depending on where they live, not having a job might make therapy unaffordable.

And applying for disability is really hard. I've seen the process up close with my grandmother, who was legally blind, but still had to jump through hoops for over half a year to get it.

These posts are the reason why I've developed an almost Pavlovian response to the words "signal boost"...

I got it blacklisted.

I had to stop following many people who refused to tag those signal boosting post because they wanted to make sure no one would block them.

Yeah, I don't pay attention to any of the sob stories I see on Tumblr nowadays. I just scroll on by.

+1

The guilty tripping is what I hate the most, because it's so obviously perfectly scripted for tumblr's audience and yet manipulative that it somehow works, so telling people to stop feeding scammers is never an option and these things never go away.

Too many begging campaigns like this has hardened me to people asking for money in general. Some of the worst I've seen:

* a couple with a gofundme for their honeymoon - Fuck no. Same goes for weddings, either have the wedding/honeymoon you can afford, or forget it. If you want it that bad, work extra hours, save up your money, whatever.

* a former fanfic writer who wasn't able to make it as a novelist because of personal issues, which I sympathize with but get this... she wants people to just send her money. Not for her medical bills, which are covered, but because she would like you to pay her mortgage on the big expensive house she just caaaaaaaan't move out of for Reasons.

* fund this amazing self published book - No. If you want to do this, put your own work and money into it, it doesn't have to to cost thousands of dollars. THEN market the hell out of it with all the stupid signal boosting you're using now to beg for a handout.

I don't think the gofundme for a honeymoon is to bad as long it is in the "in lieu of gifts" type thing. People are getting married these days don't have the need for a most of the stuff that people use to give as gifts so asking help with the honeymoon might be a better use of the money...

disability is not the massive amount of money you seem to think it is.
