How do you feel about portrayals of pre-teens/young teens exploring sexual activity?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard a lot of "Noooooo I won't write/read/watch anything that involves sexual activity if the characters aren't over 18" and I totally understand that when it comes to porn or any erotic grey area that comes close to porn.

But at the same time...underage sexuality is a thing, and to be quite honest, there are quite a sizable number of children in their early teens or even earlier who sometimes explore it with each other (especially when it's not full-on sex, just groping, or looking at or touching each other's genitalia, etc), and it just seems kind of sad/odd to me to say that nope, this is a subject that CANNOT be depicted in any level of detail because it ~might~ be construed in a porny way by someone, somewhere. Thoughts?

This is one of those "it really, really depends on how it's done" areas.

Meh.

I'd probably feel more strongly about it if I were a teen or pre-teen, looking for positive portrayals of sexuality and sexual diversity. Now I just can't care. Kids explore sex. Big whoop.

I think it's pretty normal in YA stuff.

As long as it's not porn, or obviously created by an adult getting off on the characters being young and having sex.

It's weird: I think it's fine if it's portrayed tastefully and honestly, and I think it's fine if it's just nutty over-the-top porno fantasy (not involving any real kids, obviously) but stuff anywhere in the middle creeps me WAY the hell out.

I don't really want to read about that in any graphic detail.

I could read very vague, realistic depictions of younger teens exploring sexuality... if it was relevant enough to the greater story in some way. But I really don't think it's in good taste to have a graphic depiction of that, no matter how genuine it is intended to be.

"I really don't think it's in good taste to have a graphic depiction of that"

Why? Genuine question. Why do you believe this is so?

Obviously it's because AYRT is a narrow-minded prude while you're so progressive and enlightened, duh.

idk, I think it's okay if they're making out and it fades to black or whatever, but actual nudity/sex would be kind of messed up (I mean, even if the actor is 20 or something like they usually are, it's still a little weird to me)

What if it's animated or a book and doesn't involve actors?

And/or why would it be weird to you if you would be willing to watch the same thing if the 20 year old actor was playing a 20 year old?

Yeah, I hate that for mainstream movies it's the norm to just pretend that teens aren't interested in sex until they're 18.
I find that the way coming of age anime like Evangelion handle that much closer to my own experience. I mean, I (consciously) masturbated since I was about nine and had *wanted* to get laid since I was about 12. I ended up at 18 because I was awkward and gay but it wasn't for a lack of interest in the activity.

I also get irationally pissed off if people call EVA or Utena creepy for having the 14 year olds in it have sex or sexual feelings because that feels like a really unhealthy, bigoted and unrealistic way to look at it.

THANK YOU

(I've never seen Evangelion though so I don't know if it works well IMO or not)

I try to approach it as a matter of what's right for the characters. Even if the readers are adults, good writing can take them back and remind them of what it was like to be that age.

I would be remiss not to mention that the first story I wrote that wasn't for school involved underage sexual experimentation. If it hadn't gotten such a positive response, I would probably never have become a writer.

It happens in real life, and hiding the fact that it does happen isn't going to make it go away. As long as it doesn't come across as some weird pornographic fantasy, then portraying it is okay, just like any other aspect of life.

This.

Also I actually think that pretending it doesn't happen will mean kids have fewer models and examples and guides to okay vs abusive/creepy behavior when it comes to sexual experimentation and are more likely to be tricked into thinking something exploitative and unhealthy is "just how it is" if they want to have sexual experiences because they have never seen anything that they can compare it to.

I'm sort of okay with it, but I must admit here's more potential to skeeve me out than with adults.

I find that I'm no that bothered it it's among peers, but age differences (like it the secret) do make me side things. Sex among two 14-year-olds though? Depending on the story, that could be perfectly fine.

I think it's fine to show them having a sexuality. I don't think it's cool to objectify them. I don't want 13 year old panty shots. Gross.

I couldn't care less unless it's exploiting/abusing real life teens.

I don't have a problem with it because it IS a thing and I think most of us have experienced it ourselves and thus can relate to it. I mean, I remember being 14 and having my first boyfriend and our first fumbling attempts at making out. I look back on it with nostalgia now because it was an important part of developing my sexuality and learning what I wanted/what I liked and also just learning what it was like to be close like that with another person. I imagine a lot of other people feel the same way about their teenage experiences.

I think either all fiction is okay or none of it's okay

finding it skeevy is one thing, but countries that go ott and ban fictional underage depictions of sex on the basis of it being cp or something are ridiculous

It's a pretty normal part of growing up. I mean there is a difference between writing about a teen's sexual growth, experiences for the sake of their development as a character and blatant fetishism for kicks.

Because while teens have sex, author demographics being what they are, it's almost always an adult writer (and animator/illustrator/production crew/etc.) actually producing the media, and adults rhapsodizing about teenage sexuality skeeve most people right the fuck out.

I tend to have a pragmatic view that teenagers have sex, so implying that they have sex is just acknowledging that. The real issue is who it's with and how it's presented. Two under-age teenagers having sex? It happens. A teenager and an adult? I expect it depicted as anywhere between not ideal to outright wrong.

Now I'm not big on explicit depictions, either visual or written. Unspecific descriptions or straight fade-to-black work fine for me.
