No, I haven't had the money for the DLC and I'm not thrilled by the spoilers I got. I feel like Infinite is really well self-contained. When it ends, the story is over. Because of the multiverse, you could theoretically keep going, but honestly I felt like it had a really satisfying ending. It's the only thing where I didn't go 'OMG I NEED ALL THE FANFIC.' I'll probably play the DLC at some point, but it lacks a lot of what I loved about Infinite.

I highly recommend the DLC tbh, if for no other reason than it actually adds a story to the half-baked ideas BSI presented then never really followed through with.

I found BSI to be trite and shallow and self-indulgent and ham-fisted, largely because Ken Levine has increasingly lost his grasp on the concept of subtlety with each successive game he's directed. (Seriously, compare his writing for 1998's Thief: The Dark Project with BSI and it's like he reversed in age from someone who knew how to write to a college freshman who thinks he's got all the answers 'cuz he read a Wikipedia page or two about racism.) The DLC fixes a lot of my problems with BSI's plot, setting, and even its general premise. I never liked how simplistic the multiverse thing was, especially since it was used as an excuse to throw the only sympathetic character (Daisy Fitzroy) under the bus to make a lame point about rebellions being "just as bad as" the oppressive regimes they seek to overthrow, which is trite, glib, undifferentiated and ahistorical. To say nothing of how clumsy the game was with the historic racism and American exceptionalism topics.

It also does a lot to make Elizabeth not a Disney princess, which I was grateful for because for all the marketing hype surrounding her she sure was a pretty shallow character.

Wow, you and I had very different experiences with Bioshock Infinite. I didn't get the idea that rebellions are 'just as bad', just that Daisy in her desire to do good had become what she hated, which is both a common theme in media and fits in with the games theme of people having good and bad to them. (Booker is a good guy with the potential to become Comstock, the Luteces seem like friendly, helpful, comic relief until you realize the entire game is their fault and in fact Rosalind doesn't believe it can be fixed at all and is just along for the ride. Elizabeth is the sweetest character in the whole city, but has the potential to wage war on the world, and the songbird appears to be the villain only to be revealed to be the bad guy.)

And even then, I still got the impression that it was Comstock's fault Daisy became what she did.

I also didn't think Elizabeth was shallow at all.

Well, I'm just gonna have to agree to disagree on this.

That being said... I still think you should give the DLC a try. Have you played the original Bioshock? It's a little ham-fisted in its themes still, but it's overall a better game and better story. (I also recommend 2 -- you can tell that's the best one because Ken Levine, in his infinite wisdom, has declared it non-canon because he didn't work on it.) Burial at Sea probably won't have the same impact if you haven't.

(I might just have it in for Levine -- I think he's an egomaniac, but then again a lot of devs who cut their teeth in the 90s and early 2000s are like that. Warren Specter, John Romero, David fucking Cage oh my god.)

I have played all three. I really liked Infinite, but I do think 1 and 2 were better. Although a part of that was my extreme hatred of the combat system and how the game seems to EXPECT that you die. Here, now you can only carry two guns, combat is literally always with waves of enemies, and you will likely die every six minutes on the easiest difficulty. But it's ok because Elizabeth will fix you as opposed to just making it possible to survive on your own. That's fun, right? (Meanwhile I died not at all in Bioshock and exactly once in 2)

Yeah, BSI's combat is basically a Call of Duty clusterfuck only worse. I hate it so much. BS1/2's combat at least resembled System Shock 2...

Anyway, if you get around to playing the DLC let me know what you think! There was very little I didn't like in it. And 1998 mode was exactly what I wanted it to be.

I hear good things about SS but haven't played.

I plan to play it eventually! It's on my list of things to buy.

System Shock is one of my all-time favorites, though it's a bit cliche-embracing at times. Both games are on gog.com and SS2 is also on Steam. And they're working on an SS1 remake AND an SS3, on top of SS1 being available for sale for the first time in 20 years. Everyone thought the series was dead (mostly due intellectual property issues) and that was half the reason Bioshock got made in the first place. It's never been a better time to be a fan :)

(I hope they make a new Bioshock, though -- with Levine out of the picture it might even be good!)

Awesome! I'll put System Shock on my list as well.

I'd love a new Bioshock but my concern is that Bioshock is big on twists, and while I did like Infinite, it's twist is just on this side of good. Trying to top that will dive into bad fanfic territory. Also I'd want a new Bioshock with the same set up as one and two because again, Infinite's combat system sucked.
