HP shipping wank was actually pretty humorless, ugly, and vicious, though.

Yeah. Harmonians loved to trot out the argument that Ron was an abusive asshole and anyone who shipped Harmione/Ron was enabling and supporting an abusive relationship.

They had their funny sides (their "canon proof" for H/Hr and the insistence that they knew the characters better than JKR after Deathly Hollows), but they could get just as nasty as the shippers today.

To this day Harry/Hermione is the only pairing I've gotten annoyed with solely because of the shippers. I hate to generalize any shipping community but my GOD.

It really was. Although I'd say both sides were ugly and vicious and it always bug me when people talk about that war as if it was one-sided. There were a lot of nasty extremist shippers on both sides. I was part of it and by the end I was so very tired of it. I was tired of my fellow shippers who even started attacking people who shipped H/Hr differently than them. I was tired of canon-only shippers who it seemed thought disliking parts of canon was blasphemy or something. Even though I still love fics, I'm so happy I left the fandom. It just became a miserable place to be for everyone.

I admit R/Hr shippers could be assholes to H/Hr shippers, but lol no, there was no equivalent to the rabid Harmonian contingent of fandom. It wasn't anywhere close to an equal-blame situation.

Yes, there were. There were some canon shippers who bashed anyone who dared to ship non-canon ships. Some people even went to the personal journals of H/Hr shippers to stalk them or left nasty reviews on all the fics.

No, post HPB, there were no canon shippers who were bashing characters or insisting that canon was wrong and JKR was wrong for writing R/Hr and H/G. But there were some who made the ship war personal and attacked people for not liking their ships. Or who acted like all H/Hr shippers were like the rabid Harmonains and who insisted that shipping H/Hr was objectively wrong in the same way that some H/Hr shippers were saying canon was wrong.

Nah. As obnoxious as those canon only fans were, H/Hr shippers were on an entire different plane of craziness and obnoxiousness. They were a bunch of shitty, smug, arrogant assholes, Harmonians became the laughing stock of fandom for a good reason.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. That's not to say that ALL Harmonians were like that, because there's always reasonable people out there, but the outspoken members of the group were obnoxious and crazy to an extra degree.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not completely one-sided, no, but I'll say this much: the Harmonians earned their batshit reputation. Non-H/Hr shippers could be scary and rabid, but they didn't go around comparing their ship being sunk to black slavery, they didn't get downright vicious and ugly about Rowling's personal life and they didn't trumpet their intellectual superiority to the rest of fandom one-tenth as loudly. Remember that one Harmonian teacher who had her students write an essay about Harry Potter and gave high scores to the ones who shipped Harry/Hermione and flunked the ones who shipped Ron/Hermione? Yep.

Oh, wow. I honestly totally missed that stuff. All I saw was the character bashing and author insulting vs. the gloating and both sides having members who got stalky towards members the other ship. I really never saw any of that stuff. That's really bad. Though I'd say at least in my experience that would be a very small number of the shippers. Most weren't anywhere near that crazy.

I don't remember that, but I do remember some alleged H/Hr teacher who would go on about how he could tell which of his students were smart or stupid by whether they shipped H/Hr or R/Hr. It might have been a user called Falcon, but all those Harmonians who participated in the ship war thread at Fictionalley were the absolute worst so it could have been anyone.
