Rose tinted nostalgia goggles. It was just as bad, you've just forgotten. Just the other day when I talked about shipping Zutara an anon reminded me that rabid Zutara fans accused Kataang fans of pedophilia, and the Kataang fans referred to Zutara as rapey and abusive. Likewise, Harmonians occasionally accused Heron fans of supporting abuse because Hermione and Ron bickered all the time. And there was a lot of Ron hate in general.

Yeah, I can see that's the case. I was generally on the periphery of ship wars and must have missed a lot - I saw more of the stuff that got mocked and less of the cruel, truly humorless stuff.

I never understood the Ron hate, thogh. Him being abusive is incredibly OOC.

I was young so I missed out on a lot of it but I was just becoming active when Zutara wank went down so I was front and center for it.

Bickering = He is an abuser who wants Hermione to stay in the kitchen, obvs. /s

There was also some genuine meta about how Ron was a good person with flaws, and that tended to be used to say 'SEE HE'S AN ASSHOLE.'

But flawed characters are interesting! Ron meta turned him from my least to my favorite of the trio. I guess rabid shippers will see what they want to see.

Yeah, I like my characters better with flaws. But the difference between shipping and rabid shipping is of course the insanity.

I was never in the "Harry Potter" fandom, but...wow. Seriously? That is the dumbest reasoning I've ever heard in my life. By that logic, my parents' marriage would've been abusive, since they argued a lot.

Like, do these people not understand that sometimes couples will fight? And that that's not necessarily a bad thing? There is such a thing as verbal and emotional abuse, of course, and that would certainly be wrong if a couple was going to that level of fighting.

But if a couple's simply arguing over who's taking out the trash or whose turn it is to cook or things of that sort, that's...pretty normal argument fare.

I suspect honestly that a lot of fans didn't actually believe it themselves, but they were really defensive of their ship and wanted to be right.

I was going to say, faux-moralizing has been around in ship wars forever, it's just gotten easier to use buzz phrases both to "call out" problematic shipping and to dismiss those who disagree as a crazy SJW.
