How do you know if you're punching up?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Like, doesn't all punching feel like punching up? so how can you ever be sure you're not punching down?

Really?

Do men feel like they're punching up if they make rape jokes?

I don't understand the mentality, how mocking any victim could be OK.

I admit it's hard not to mock Trump sometimes, though. 😞

What does Trump have to do with punching up or not mocking victims? He's a fucking billionaire, and hardly a victim.

It's not nice to make fun of people with brain damage though.

Mocking people. I want to mock him, but it's so easy...and is mockery ever really healthy? I think about these things...

I'm assuming you mean in the context of "punching up" in satire (ie using it to attack groups with power over you)

And I would say, I don't think its that hard to tell. Just think of your own relation to the group you are satirizing.

Eh. In my opinion a lot of times "I'm punching up" seems to be used as a shitty excuse people can make for why their assholery and bullying is okay. Just like "the victim was asking for it", and etc.

Making fun of establishment or social mores and people who publically personify those values = punching up.

Personal attacks on people for other reasons than publically stated beliefs/opinions (eg. height, weight, racial stereotype) = punching down.

Doesn't really matter which side you're punching, or where the person is in any supposed social hierarchy. If you're mocking someone for something they can't control, or something they never said (but is just associated with a stereotype) you're punching down.

RL example of punching up: making fun of Trump for representing an overblown, highly publicized version of "Murrican" values.

Punching down: mocking Britney Spears for being a blonde airhead or suspected emotional problems because "she's a celebrity, she can take it".

Priorities, guys.

It's true, all violence feels justified when you're doing it. the trick is to know who the acceptable targets are before lashing out. If you have strong pre-held convictions, and you let them guide you, it's easy to see who deserves the violence when the time comes.

Assuming your conviction isn't "gay people are filthy animals."

One of my strong convictions is an abhorrence of violence. You honestly need to grow up.

I don't particularly agree with what you're saying here (or maybe it's just that I don't agree with the vibe I'm getting due to the exact way you're saying it). However, there definitely is something to be said for knowing yourself and knowing where you stand on certain things. That's not a guarantee that your stance will not still be shitty. But if you take the time to think important issues through (often on repeat occasions) when you're calm and have the time and energy to give the matter the thought it deserves, you're a lot more likely to have a clear, reasonable perspective.

Which then allows you to respond more fairly and appropriately when that issue comes up. You'll be less likely to punch down.

Attack the doctrine, not its followers. Customs and policies are bigger than people, so any person can punch up against them. Just be careful that your attacks can't be read as attacks on people. (The "regressive left" debacle is a good example to learn from--progressive Muslim criticizes liberals for not criticizing fundamentalist Islam, then gets hijacked by people who hate all Muslims.)

If you're not perceptive enough to figure this out, you're not perceptive enough to make any jokes that are actually funny.
