Bastard children

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you do with bastard children? I don't mean your own.

Story: Out and about today. Eating a sarnie and I notice a bunch of birds are accruing around me. So of course I start tearing of bits of the bread and throwing it to them. Cute little fuckers go into a frenzy.

This this little shit-of-the-world comes out of the fucking wood-work and starts trying to stomp and kick the birds. I'm not talking about a toddler, I'm talking like 10-11 years old.

So What do you do? Cause I gave it the hairy eyeball and did nothing else. What's the etiquette on, I don't know, saying "Don't do that you little psychopathic shit." or I don't know, what do you do about that?

Re: Bastard children

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, but you really shouldn't give bread products to birds. It's bad for them.

Re: Bastard children

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The kid is being a nasty thing, but casually calling people "it" doesn't make you look like a gem either.

Re: Bastard children

this. both sides are looking douchey from where I'm sitting

Re: Bastard children

NAYRT
"it" is still the appropriate pronoun for children in some regions and dialects, and definitely in other languages. (In mine, for one, so I tend to make that mistake)

I think they were using "it" as a gender-neutral pronoun, while not wanting to state the child's gender and drag the conversation into "boys are raised like this" / "girls are raised like this".

Try to explain to him that what he did is wrong AND (this is important) try to make him feel bad for doing it. We are talking about animals here, it's not like he was kicking the trash can. I don't think is right to ignore animal cruelty.

It's pretty socially acceptable to say to a strange kid 'Don't do that', and even gently hold them by the arm to restrain them if they insist on acting badly.

Re: Bastard children

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Erm... If you're a dude, don't ever do that. Even if you're not a dude don't do that. So many kids today carry weapons.

I pay the prospective mother to go to on a trip to visit Aunt Jane, so the question of a bastard child does not arise.

Video them (discreetly) and then pass the video off to the police, making sure to get a crime reference or incident number from them.

Tell him to stop it: you don't do that to living creatures. Even if he don't stop immediately, it is important that he get some feedback on what is acceptable and what is not.

Publically? Yell at them. Tell them to cease that behaviour immediately.

9 out of ten times they are stunned, mumble apologies, and run away. 1 out of ten times, their parent/guardian gets mad that I yelled at their shitspawn, and I tell them to stop being a terrible parent.

Those are pretty good odds, and if the brat gets the idea that the world won't tolerate them being a dick to things then I feel my job is done.

Re: Bastard children

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's a kid who's capable of hearing and understanding the language you speak, you tell him/her to knock it off.

If their parent comes around, you explain calmly what's going on. If said parent is in deep denial about their precious little crotch droplet, well, you could either tell them off or let it go, but be prepared that the former might not go so well.

Re: Bastard children

The problem lies with you. Do go around feeding crap to the birds.

Re: Bastard children

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Speak sharply to the child and let them know it's not okay to hurt animals.

2. Stop feeding birds crap. Bread isn't good for birds as it has little nutritional value.

Re: Bastard children

I dunno. Kids act like kids, and that's why I haven't had any. I sure don't wanna be stuck having to discipline anyone else's.

We have some kids in our neighborhood who appear to be neglected by their parents, so they're always doing stuff like this to get attention, but I don't know what kind of attention to give them over than "WTF is wrong with you?"

Walk far away from the kid and feed the birds somewhere else. Alternatively, placing myself somewhere where the kid can't reach and feed the birds there.

Alternatively tell him to STOP THAT in a very dry and very loud way.

Tell the kid to stop and that animal cruelty is a crime.

"Hey, knock it off. Leave the birds alone or I'm going to call the Bird Police (animal control)." And if he continues to be a dumbass, move to be physically between the kid and the birds (without touching the kid) and get my phone out.

And yes, I have Animal Control's number on my phone, because i have had a string of deeply shitty neighbors.

1. Calling people "it" isn't super cute

2. A simple, "Hey, don't do that, you don't want to hurt the birds" will more than likely suffice, either by making the kid self-conscious enough to stop, or making the parent self-conscious enough to tell the kid to stop/move them away.

3. Don't give birdies bread! Especially not a lot of it. It doesn't hurt them per se, but they fill up on nutrient-less bread so they don't know to look for more food that actually nourishes them.

4. Denouncing children as "shit-of-the world" is a little much, and also I thought this was going to be about children born out of wedlock.

5. What happened to the Calm-Down-Time anon? We need you, sir/madam/variation thereupon.

I try once nicely to get them to stop, then I'm not above telling this kid to fuck right the hell off before I have them arrested for being an asshole. You're likely to get some asshole parent all up in your shit for swearing at their hellspawn, but that's their problem, as long as you don't physically lay a hand on their kid, you did nothing wrong.

there are few times when yelling at someone else's kids is appropriate, one of them is if they're about to seriously hurt themselves or others, so a kid trying to step on birds applies. since clearly their own parents don't give a shit, I'd say you're well within your right to shout at them to stop, though I wouldn't curse or call them a name, lest mommy dearest crawl out from a hole and start screaming at you.
