I've been having vague SGA pangs lately, and am thinking about having a rewatch. I think back to the fandom and wish I had actually participated in it. I was 100% lurker back then, instead of the 70% I am today.

I miss SGA sometimes too! I have all the seasons on DVD, but I haven't found time for a rewatch.

SGA fandom was probably the fandom I was most 'active' in (besides maybe House). The fanbase was definitely great; there were episode discussion posts that were fun to participate in, and I miss that kind of thing. The fanfic for SGA was also incredible, and I don't think I've been in a fandom since that I found SO MUCH that I enjoyed.

Looking back on it today, SGA fandom seems almost unbelievable. It was so bloody HUGE! I don't think there's been such an all-encompassing fandom since. And so much great fic *sigh*

It HAS been years so some of the fic I loved back then probably wouldn't stand the test of time, but I have no doubt that a decent amount of it would. 'Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose' is one of my all time favorite fanfics.

The general atmosphere of the fandom was pretty nice too, but I was in the McShep corner and stayed the hell away from ship wars. I hear that John/Weir vs. John/Teyla was a thing for a time, but I didn't notice much about it.

Huh, I don't think I've ever actually read 'Freedom...', even though it's clearly one of the most famous SGA fics. I think I'll download the podfic of it and give it a listen :-)

Yeah I was McShep too, but I also loved a bit of Lorne/Radek or Lorne/Parrish!

I don't think I've ever listened to the podfic! I've read the fic quite a few times, and I DO remember downloading the podfic, but I guess I never got around to it. Should do that too...

Anyway, there's no guarantee you'll like it (is there with anything? lol), but I think it's worth a shot!

Lorne/Parrish is a ship I never paid much attention to, but I think I could enjoy it. I was also into Teyla/Ronon, though there's not much of that so I stuck to McShep fic.

I think I tend to go for the more...tropey, id-filled fics, rather than the think-pieces, which is probably why I never read it.

Lorne/Parrish was very cute, and a nice breather from the constant onslaught of McShep. I mean, they were still a soldier and a geek, but they had very different personalities to Sheppard and McKay (or at least, fandom gave them personalities - I think Parrish was in all of two episodes).

I can't exactly say I only read 'think-pieces', as I went through quite a lot of 'aliens made them do it' fic in SGA fandom. (So no judging on my part.) Variety is good, though!

I think Parrish was in all of two episodes

I thought it was one or two, so that sounds about right. You're very correct about fandom giving minor characters compelling personalities though!

Coming out of pseudo-f!s hermit-dom, to say god damn I miss SGA. And SG-1. Just the whole Stargate universe.

...but not actually "Stargate Universe."

Haha yeah I don't think many people miss that one :D

Oooh now I'm also having SG1 pangs! Ahh I loved Jack O'Neill so much. It was a great universe, and I really wish they'd fire it up again (but do it better than SGU).

My brother-in-law's been playing them recently as background noise whenever I come over to his house and help babysit. It's weird since both him and I've seen every episode of both SG1 and SGA, but my sister's never seen a single one. (She also tends to be really busy and stressed though, so it's kind of hard to broach the idea of 15 full-American-length, full-American-episode seasons.)

I don't know. Maybe one day. Maybe 8 years from now I can at least get my nephew into it.

I'd love for them to continue it too, but I think they'd have to work hard not to run into the same issues that SGU had. Mainly, twisting the tone of the show to fit whatever current TV trends there are. Stargate at its heart is optimistic, focusing on small team that eventually operates like family, with central base of operations that feels like home, and episodically exploring a new world each week with a sense of adventure.

And I think you could tweak one or two of those elements, but anything more doesn't feel like it's part of the same universe. (See SGU: cynical with only hints of optimism, constant clashes between crew members and who's sleeping with who, almost everyone resents the Destiny and wants to get home, a lot of the new world exploration was about survival.)

You perfectly described what I found off-putting about SGU - it totally lacked the small group dynamic. And you're right, SG1 and SGA did have a very optimistic, family feel to it. SGU felt like it was trying to fit in with the 'gritty reboot' trend, I think.

The whole idea of a stargate is such a great concept for a sci-fi show. I really want it to come back in some form.

I used to want to rewatch SGA, until I did. It has not aged well. It is very post-9/11 in tone. Full of people committing senseless and stupid brutality simply because they can and trying to pass it off as the greater good or hard men making hard choices instead of it just being because it was the most convenient way. And those are our heroes. Makes you want to root for the Wraith really.

some shows do not age well at all.
