Handheld weapons

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2016-03-06 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Okay question. What are some handheld weapons a kid can learn and use for self protection? That are not guns. So far I know of blades/knives, bow and arrow, slingshot. Anything else?

staff would be the really easy answer, you can find a stick anywhere

Going off from that, you can get wooden swords/training swords as well.

Ohhh I dunno why I didn't think of those! Thanks to both of you.

True, but a random stick you find on the ground won't necessarily be great protection. Most likely it'll just snap the first time you try to defend yourself or attack someone. Staffs that are for fighting are usually hardwood (or perhaps bamboo), tough enough to stand up to repeated impact. Otherwise they're useless.

In Elementary, Joan has an extended baton that collapses small so it fits in her purse. It's awesome. Also, maybe a taser?

Oh that looks neat.

Also a taser sounds like a possibility, probably a little training involved.

I think my ex referred to that as a tasp?

Just about anything you can hold in your hand can be used as a weapon.

The real trick is psyching yourself up to do harm to someone.

Training, training, training. The military spends a a great deal of time, money, and manpower teaching potential recruits not to flinch before hitting someone. Hell, that is half of what sparring is when teaching boxing, just teaching the kid to hit another human being without worrying about it. Unless you have a dyed in the wool sociopath or psychopath, then unless you've put in a lot of hours training in hurting another human being a weapon is useless. If you have put in the training, they won't worry about needing a weapon, and probably won't look like a target either.

Errrrrr not really, adrenaline/flight-or-fight does wonders when it comes to becoming violent in an emergency.

Being EFFECTIVELY violent is a different story...

A cloth bag of pennies. That he actually takes pennies out of to use as payment too. It is about the only thing you can justify carrying around for use as a weapon but not actually get in trouble with the cops. Anything else and it isn't seen as self-defense but as an admission of intent to start a fight. Teach the kid to retreat to a safe place instead.

..um, sweetie-pie, pretttttty sure the OP is asking as research for a story. About a kid who has a reason to need to defend themselves.
