It depends, judgy anon! I'm wearing mine now because I know I just have to go back out to my apartment's laundry room in half an hour so it seems like a hassle to take them off, and it's sort of chilly so I'd rather not walk around barefoot. But if I've been wearing uncomfortable shoes all day, I'll usually take them off and put on socks if it's the winter, or go barefoot if it's the summer.

Also, we have these magical inventions called door mats that we use to wipe off our feet before going inside. But don't tell anyone! It's our secret so that people continue thinking we're gross.

Not OP, but most places have door mats and most people still don't wear shoes around the house. You can use one and still leave your shoes in the hallway.

But the door mat still has the same purpose of cleaning off the shoes. It's not like people jump over it and then stomp around in dirty shoes.

I use my door mat every day, but I still wouldn't call my shoes clean enough to walk around in in my newly cleaned apartment. I would have to give them a good clean with soap and water for that.

In my experience doormats are far from perfect at cleaning shoes completely, though? So unless you sit there scrubbing at your feet every time you come in, you're still tracking in a hell of a lot of germs & dirt.

I guess it depends where you live, though? Stomping around in your outdoor shoes in the middle of winter in New York would be a very different experience from doing it in, idk, Arizona.

Personally I don't get the fear of tracking in germs on your shoes. Do you go around licking the floor? Do you refuse to touch anything that's been on the ground outside? (which I don't think is even that gross, actually)

You might have stepped in old dog poo without realising and you didn't get all of it off on the mat so now you're tracking it around your house for instance? Not something I find appealing at least.

I typically watch where I am stepping and I typically notice if I've stepped in something that gross. Besides I don't usually walk on grass and sidewalks are pretty easy to see, even without staring at them, if there's stuff on them that shouldn't be there.

I take it you don't have carpet? My house actually has white carpet. It's not a matter of simply "clean your floors more often" (and frankly, that seems like good enough a reason, why dirty your floors more quickly by wearing shoes?) it's a matter of me not wanting to shampoo my carpets regularly.

I do indeed have carpet. My entire apartment is carpeted except the kitchen and bathroom. For one thing, I have to ask what kinds of surfaces you regularly walk on that wearing your shoes on the carpet requires you to regularly shampoo it - if I track in a little dirt a regular vacuum takes care of it, and it's unavoidable anyway since the carpet comes right up to the doorway. But for another thing, I was talking about germs, not dirt, in the comment you replied to.
