Re: Batman V Superman

In some sense, you do have a stick by with to measure it, as all the buzz says it will be very much like Man of Steel (which would've been an okay movie if it wasn't a Superman movie).

For me, I just don't like grim/dark. I listen to the BTS stuff where HC talks about Superman and where he's at, and it just sounds so unappealing. I wish they'd gone for a brighter, more optimistic Superman. Then the contrast with Batman would be more interesting. But it just looks like a pissing match. And visually, it's not interesting. Everything's so gray and lifeless and dull. You can't even pick out Superman in some shots and he should be wearing bright blue and red.

I also dislike that as soon as you say you dislike Man of Steel and the new Superman, people immediately jump to the conclusion that it's because of Superman killing Zod. No, it's because he's a lifeless, dull character that's been stripped of all the stuff that made Superman Superman. He's basically another Batman (personality-wise). I hate this trend of making good-natured characters grim and dark, and saying that's the only way people can relate to them. People seem to be relating just fine to Captain America. It really frustrates me, as good-natured characters are my favorite kind.

I agree with everything you said. About the grim/dark and color palette. Hell, the tiny bit of comedy we see sounded so forced.

I hated Man of Steel. The first time I watched it, I was so bored I only got halfway thru. The second time,I finished it but was utterly unimpressed.

I would live to enjoy this movie (I love Ben Affleck) but I can't get into the hype.

I agree. Batman and Superman were characters I grew up with. I loved seeing their crossover episodes in the DC animated universe. It should be awesome to see a live action version. But they're doing it in the absolutely worst way, stripping out everything interesting about the characters and leaving them not just bad, but boring.

Yeah, I loved the animated series as well. I just don't understand how they are going so wrong with the movies. And why are they trying to add so many characters at once?

I have heard some talk regarding their approach, mainly that they have to catch up to Marvel so it makes sense to introduce a bunch of characters and THEN have their origin/first movies when people already know a bit about them.

But, it does feel like it's at the expense of the Batman vs Superman part of the movie. We'll have to see how it goes. I'm hopeful that it might all tie up in a way that makes it all work, but my hope is really, really faint.

It seems so ass backwards. I think you need to establish individual characters before bringing them together. Unless you were going to focus on them as a group for all the movies (like LOTR).

DC should have just taken their time instead of trying to play catch up.

I can sort of agree but I can also see the situation where you have Cyborg or Aquaman - characters no one outside of comics knows about. If you introduce them in the Justice League, then people will come to see Batman and Superman, but get introduced to Cyborg/etc. They see this cool character and then recognize him when his own movie gets made, and more people will come see the movie. Marvel is doing something similar with Black Panther right now.

I mean, theoretically it's a sound idea. I'm wary of their actual execution though.

Yeah, Marvel did that with Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, etc. But Marvel also tended to wait for the second movies to do that instead of introducing 2 characters at once.

I agree with everything you've said. You've pinpointed a lot of major flaws with the DCCU as a whole. I think the DCAU movies do a much better job with characterization (well, generally. they've definitely had some duds, but when they do it right, they really do it right)

I agree. While I did read DC comics growing up, I think my standard is still Batman from the B:TAS and Superman from the S:TAS. They were really well done.

ayrt

Those were such great series! I really liked Justice League as well. Everyone in my family loved it and we always watched the new episodes together. It was a big deal for us

I'm okay with Clark killing Zod. Clark in the comics absolutely hates doing that stuff and 99.9% of the time he'll never do it, but he does have a once-in-a-lifetime exception with the Pocket Universe version of Zod. It messed him up for quite some time; my problem with the DCCU is that this version of Clark doesn't seem too bothered by what he did.
