What does it take for you to accept that your ship won't happen?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Or are you the kind of shipper that endlessly demands their ship to be canon even when one of the characters married someone else?

The series ending and the pairing not happening. :-/ I can hope until then.

Depending on the ship, I go in to it knowing that it is purely a fantasy and will never ever happen. (Rey/Kylo or Draco/Ginny are two examples) I just like to see where the authors will take the characters and how they'll write them, either going super out of character or if the personalities will somehow come together.

Absolutely nothing, as most of my ships are slash and I know they won't happen. I ship almost exclusively based on chemistry, meaning if they're het, they happen with roughly 100% certainty, so... There's no suspense. They gender of the characters = whether they'll get together or not.

I'm more surprised when they do happen. Although there are times I'll stop watching when they get conclusively ruled out (like B99).

I'm drawn to ships that I *know* won't happen.

I just accept from the word go that most things I look at and think "now kiss already" aren't going to happen. I learned to handle that disappointment from the ripe old age of four, courtesy of Star Trek TNG. Damn near everyone got to kiss everyone else, but can I get Data and Geordi to kiss? Of course not, because then they killed Data off to save Picard even though they killed Kirk off in the last TOS movie.

Yes, I'm still bitter about this, why do you ask.

I don't tend to want/need my ships to happen because on the rare occasion that they do become canon, their relationship tends to get shitty writing. I also have a lot of incest ships, so it's not like I think those will actually happen (I mean, maybe if I was shipping stuff from Game of Thrones or something...)

It depends on the ship, if it's slash or femslash it's a given that it likely won't ever be canon so I never expect that to be on the table and I'm not the sort of person to demand that it happens either(sure it'd be nice if it did but I don't ever get my hopes up). I just enjoy how the relationship plays out on-screen as is and ship away in my head.

I find it very easy to accept my ship won't happen, because I'm a non-canon shipper most of the time.

If I see a couple of characters I think have chemistry, that is all I need to go searching for fic. In fact I view non-canon status as liberating because one is not hemmed in by the rhythm of the relationship as depicted by canon, and their is no annoying "My ship is canon!" pride getting in the way of things.

Even in fandom juggernaut pairings with a lot of fans wanting it to be canon (remember, I spent a year in SPN), I am more likely to be that shipper who sits back and says "Naaaah, I don't think it will happen".

They're both obviously straight women. Like, if they were introduced as rivals for the same guy, yeah, the writers most likely aren't going to flip that to the two of them dating. Things like that sometimes happen in reality, but it's pretty weird, right?

In canon, it takes usually a canon ending. Otherwise anything can happen. But I'm generally perfectly content shipping fanon. I have a few canon ships, but my biggest ships are all fanon and I'm totally okay with that.

Most shows have a pattern or a tendency for what kinds of ships they showcase. When I don't like the canon ship, I generally ship something the show wouldn't touch because it's well outside the pattern.

99% if my ships are slash. And of two het ships I had interest in, the one them, the male character was fucking murdered before they got together (actor wanted off the show). The other she was married to someone else (a movie based fandom) andstayed with her husband.

As much as I never expect my ships to happen, part of me secretly longs for the day when one of them finally will. A vain hope, I know.

That I ship it. I can't even think of any ships I have that haven't been sunk, usually by character death, right now.

I never think any of my ships will be canon. Most of my ships are slash. I do ship het, but only one of my het ships has sailed and I'm still surprised it did. The wank from the Naruto fandom was pretty entertaining to watch though.

I really don't care of my ships are "endgame" or not.

I have low expectations at all times. The idea of demanding my ship happen is absolutely foreign to me, as well.

All my wrestling ships are as canon as you can get with without them actually making out in the ring (although they do kiss each other on the head and such), so I can't really ask for much more.

Same as [personal profile] ariakas. My slash ships wont ever happen so I don't really care. I continue shipping on.

Re het: I think it's a bit tricky because you never know what the author is going to do, and het usually have the biggest possibility of becoming canon. Also after No Bra, I don't trust authors anymore. Shipping is suffering.

One or both hooking up with somebody else, and their relationship is not portrayed as 'just a speedbump to the true relationship'.

But, honestly, I generally don't expect my 'ships to be canon, unless canon has already been building toward or teasing it.

I don't want them to happen

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
The second a ship becomes canon, I stop reading fic for it. I'm okay with watching whatever relationship in canon, but I like fic about relationships that aren't happening or won't happen in canon.

Unless the canon is clearly signalling that this pairing is ENDGAME, I generally make the assumption that it's not gonna happen, then I can be pleasantly surprised in the (UNLIKELY) event that it does.

Re: What does it take for you to accept that your ship won't happen?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 07:32 am (UTC)(link)

For me, it has nothing to do with canon. I ignore the parts of canon that I dislike and I continue enjoying my ship in the form of fic, etc.
