Trump Cancels Rally

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently Trump just had to postpone a rally in Chicago due to too many protesters.

Any thoughts?

Sadly I think that in the case of Trump the protesters aren't helping. They are just fuel to the fire for the kind of person that supports Trump. I'm all for protests, I just think they should be strategic. And I don't think they are working in the case of Trump.

I agree that they're probably not going to convince any Trump supporters but you gotta do something.

I think working to convince people, especially young people to vote. The number of people voting in Republican vs. Democrat primaries was sad, and I think working on that would be a much more effective way of helping. And get the issues out there. Write about it, talk about it, let people see for themselves who Trump really is and what is policies would be.

I've actually been to a few protests, but they were all the sort that were designed to get issues in the media or to target companies or things that might actually change their policies. I think protests are a useful tool, but they have to be used right.

IDK, I heard an interview on CNN earlier and the guy said he's been hearing from republicans in upcoming state who were considering voting for Trump that some of the antics from the last few weeks (the sucker punches at rallies, his inability to distance himself from the KKK quickly, etc) have really turned them off and they're solidly against him now.

I'm glad that My Side won but I also feel like this is only going to get worse and more inflamed, especially if Trump gets the nomination, and it's hard to figure how far it'll go. I feel like we're going to see blood in the streets this summer.

If Trump gets the nomination I guarantee you the Republicans will lose the election. He's not worse than Ted Cruz, but he's utterly radioactive at this point and there's a lot of conservatives who will either not vote, vote Democratic, or write in their own candidate (a friend of mine plans to vote for Ice Cube if it comes down to Trump vs Clinton.)

I think Cruz is actually worse in terms of policies. But Cruz understand policies. Things under Cruz would be bad, but I don't think we'd lose all our allies with him whereas with Trump I think we would. And I'm not scared of Cruz having access to nuclear weapons, whereas with Trump... Trump is scary in his reactivism and in his lack of savy. He's not an idiot in terms of intelligence, but he is an idiot in terms of politics and the running of government.

Well, government isn't a business so he probably wouldn't run us into the ground the same way :P

In all seriousnessness, though, Trump has no personality. He stopped being a real person 30 years ago when he became Trump the Brand. I genuinely believe his being a nativist bombthrower who talks like a Youtube comment is all just a marketing strategy; he's recognized the modern Republican base for what it is -- racist and sexist and stupid and easily swayed by anyone who seems "strong" enough (read: manly, which is why he's done so well against his more sedate, soft-spoken competition) -- and is pandering to them directly. No pretense, no dog whistle terms, just whipping people into a frenzy. I would be very surprised if he didn't morph immediately into a proper statesman upon securing the nomination, especially now that a lot of the establishment GOP is deciding to grudgingly get behind him because they hate Cruz more.

I agree with the first part of your analysis, but I don't see how this follows from it. He has no persona and cares for nothing besides instant gratification and power - what about that says "wants to be a statesman" to you?

I'm not saying he'll keep saying the same things, or being the same kind of insane that he is right now. I do think he'll keep doing whatever ridiculous thing benefits him the most and sounds the best in any given moment without any regard for decency or outcomes or morals, and I think it's dangerously naive to expect otherwise.

I'm not sure. I mean you've a point in that it could go either way with him but I fully expect him to change his personality to look like a proper politician. It's a marketing strategy, and nobody's better at marketing Trump than Trump.

Re: Trump Cancels Rally

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think Trump can win. I certainly think he's more electable than Cruz or Rubio, and probably Kasich as well. I think it's still unlikely but it's possible.

First, I don't believe for a second that there are a statistically significant number of conservatives who will stay home if it's Trump. They might not like him but once they see The Evil Bitch Hillary or The Socialist Sanders might get it, they'll show up. That's how American politics has worked for the last, like, 30 years. And also I think, you know, the fairy dust of a competitive race will work his magic and people will suddenly start finding reasons to think he's more reasonable than he is. It's gonna happen.

So if you believe that, the question becomes one about electoral math. And at that point it's not really a question of his likability or whatever. The question is, can he win something like Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, and Florida. And I don't think that's impossible. Because I think he's going to be very, very popular with - and get great turnout from - white voters. And there are a lot of white voters in those 5 states. A lot of frightened suburbanites in particular, and I think he's going to strongly appeal to those voters in a general election scenario.

That's my nightmare anyway.

I'm choosing to be more optimistic tbh. I think how the general election plays out will depend quite a bit on what happens at the RNC.

Clinton is probably weaker than Sanders, though -- the GOP has spent literally decades convincing everyone she's the devil incarnate, and that's going to be a lot harder to get around.

Re: Trump Cancels Rally

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I do find it funny that immediately after I said that Trump isn't going to suffer from his insanity because everyone is going to convince themselves he's reasonable, you called him a statesman

It's hard to say re: Clinton and Sanders. I think Sanders is stronger in New Hampshire, maybe marginally better in Iowa, but probably significantly weaker in Virginia so who knows if the trade-off is worth it. I think there's plenty of reasons for the right to hate whichever one gets the nomination, though, so in that sense it's rather immaterial.

Re: Trump Cancels Rally

I didn't call him a statesman. I said he would morph into one, or at least something resembling one, after securing the nomination, implying that he would be doing that to appeal to more people. It certainly doesn't mean I'm going to fucking vote for him. I'll thank you to read more carefully in the future.

I think it's fair to say that Trump and the rest of the GOP has almost completely lost the black, hispanic and Muslim vote -- which means huge chunks of the south, southwest and rust belt states could be up for grabs. As far as whether or not the Dem nominee is immaterial, I'm not sure. It's a big concern for me that a lot of Bern victims are claiming that if their savior doesn't get the nomination they're not going to vote, or worse vote Republican to "punish" America. Privileged white liberals having a tantrum, really; I'm voting Bernie but I don't care who wins as long as it's not the GOP.

This is my concern, too. Liberal/Democratic voters really should band together here.

I live in Iowa, so my state's primary's been well done for a while now, but yeah, I too am fine with either Bernie or Hilary getting the nomination, and will support whomever gets it.

My point is, if even someone who isn't going to vote for him can say he's going to become a statesman, what are the idiot moderates going to think?

I would bet a lot of money that no state that went red in 2012 will go blue in 2016.

I don't think you really understand what I'm saying (perhaps intentionally?) but as I'm on my phone at the moment and in a bit of a rush I'm just going to let someone else handle it.

Not sure what I'm misunderstanding? You think he's a normal politician whose views you happen to disagree with, despite the fact that he's spent the last 9 months being the exact opposite of that.

No, that's not what I think at all, sugar cookie. I'm saying Trump is currently marketing himself as a xenophobic buffoon because he knows it will pull most of the GOP base to him, but when he gets the nomination he will pivot to a more dignified persona to appeal to "moderates" and other stupid people.

Most politicians don't do the buffoon act, because they want everyone to believe they're being rational.

And they did a good job! I've seriously seen Bernie fans using the same talking points as GOP stans, right down to Benghazi.

I'm pro-Bernie but boy do they make it hard.

Re: Trump Cancels Rally

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more fair to call them what they are, "anti-Hillary people" than "Bernie fans" as though they're representative of all of them. A lot of people that support Bernie are Republicans or formerly Republican-leaning Independents, so of course they're using GOP talking points.

Re: Trump Cancels Rally

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Not just the Republicans. A lot of Sanders supports are also saying the same thing as the Republicans.

Re: Trump Cancels Rally

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Clinton has always had a strong following regardless of how the political climate has been in the last few months. Sanders is more popular with the internet crowd, to be honest. Clinton is just a stronger candidate overall if you want to look purely at numbers.

I think the only protest that will do any good, the only protest we need is a snipers bullet the day he becomes president.
