Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
How much do you care if something is canon? (Ships, representation, hair color, whatever)

For me, I don't care whether something ends up being canon but so many people wank over it.

And what constitutes canon for you?

Re: Canon

0%. -1000. Fuck canon.

Re: Canon

Care? Well, I'd say, for me, only the narrative itself is canon. That is, the book, or game, or movie, or whatever. I don't care what even the writer says outside, only what's in there is canon to me.

Generally, what I like is ships that could fit within the confines of canon, or scenarios that break away from the canon plot. So I like characters to be as in-character as possible, but other than that, I don't mind if a certain ship is actually canon or not. It doesn't change to me whether or not it feels plausible.

It depends. I don't need something to be explicitly canon. But I'm mostly not into things that explicitly contradict canon (ships aside). I need in-character in looks and personality.

honestly, I'd prefer if most of my ships never become canon. they're either too messed up for me to actually want to see on-screen or I'm afraid they'd be given bad writing

I don't get the concept of "wishing something were canon". It's entitled bullshit, for the most part, or at least the vocal shitty tumblr part. Either I like a show/book or I don't. i wouldn't even dream of trying to argue how "if xyz were canon that would make it sooo much better."

I care in the sense that if a ship is canon there tend to be more art (even canon art) and fanworks

I don't care whether or not my ships become canon.

I do care about canon representation - the world is a large and diverse place, and media would be a hell of a lot more interesting if it reflected that instead of being largely populated by white dudes between the agesof 25 and 50.

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this.

I've been a slasher long enough to never expect my ships to be canon anyway.

But more actual LGBT characters, that I care about. More lead characters of color, more women who aren't either eye candy or Strong Female Characters (TM).

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, how much fic do you read/write featuring female characters?

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of what I produce, and a slightly less significant majority of what I read.

Which has absolute fuck all to do with anything, since we're talking about canon representation, and not fic.

I will live if my ship doesn't become canon, but I will be a bit upset if it's canonically sunken in an irremediable way.

I used not to think that way, but I feel like now there's more awareness towards slash and femslash being a thing, so there's more hope. And I'm going to cling to that hope for as long as I can.

For me it's canon if a character either says I love you or does a gesture that means the same thing, and the other character reciprocates. I think even one character confessing their romantic feelings to the other would make me happy, no matter the outcome.

This. My ship doesn't need to be canon, but if another ship gets in the way of it... well it kind of ruins it for me.

In general, I care about how each story I consume goes. For the original work, I care about its plot, characters, etc. Same for each fanfic--I care about the "canon" of the fic. I don't think fics are less worthy or meaningful than the stories that inspire them, but they're often hard to jump into unless you already know the canon, so I tend to care more about canon. (I've heard there are a ton of great Evangelion fics, but nothing I've heard about the series makes me want to watch it in order to understand the fics.)

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I rather keep something I dont like form becoming canon, than have something I like be canon.

Because its insufferable to watch a pairing you hate. But I can go without a pairing I like and get what I need from fics. I guess that makes me a negative Nancy. But less romance I say.

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I care not at all. That's the whole purpose of fic.

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like romance in canon. I've actually stopped shipping couples once they became canon. Most of my ships are crack so it doesn't happen often. I'm picky about how romance is written so I like to imagine my own scenarios instead.

Representation is something I would like to see in canon but it doesn't bother me if it isn't.

Hair color? Is there a character with a mystery hair color that people are arguing about?

Ask people if Jensen Ackles or Chris Evans are blonde or brunette.

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't care about ships, but I dislike it when fans totally revamp a character's gender/sexuality/weight solely for representation's sake. Really not my thing!

I don't need my ships to be canon, but my over-all headcanon can be influenced by canon, because even if I dislike canon, I try to adjust to it.

Re: Canon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
My ships don't have to become canon; it's only if I start to feel like they're dangling the possibility of it in front of our faces (COUGH Dean and Castiel) only to snatch it away over and over again (cough cough Zuko and Katara), then I get a little bitter about it. In general though, I'm happy to just ship away and don't feel the need for it to become Legit.

Representation, on the other hand, does matter. I want it all and I don't know why it's so hard to find.
