Something that was controversial in the 90s that hopefully no one seriously cares about any more?

A lot of the anti-furry hysteria -if it can be called that- was pretty rampant back around 2005-2009ish. I can't really describe why, I think a large part of it was -and I'm putting this in basic, basic terms- because of some of the more vocal folks who pushed what they did in the bedroom onto people who really didn't want to know those kinds of things. Not to mention the implications of bestiality, which is still pretty illegal in most places. Not all furries are into bestiality, but sadly, there's been a few notable examples that furthers this perception (i.e. Mr. Hands).

And there's the lifestylers who take it to an extreme and used terms like "fursecution" unironically (not as much anymore). Which, hey, if they wanna live that way, I got no issues with as long as it doesn't harm anyone else or any animals. But you gotta admit... "fursecution"? Yeah.

Plus, furry fandom often of overlaps with some... interesting fetishes (that, frankly, are pretty tame compared to some of the stuff that goes on in fandoms like Supernatural or BBC Sherlock, tbh), but again, there's the types that like to leave that stuff out in the open and the people who are all "Do not want" raise a big stink about it.

But then came the Brony surge from about 2011-2014ish and that diverted a lot of negative attention from the furry fandom (from what I've observed; there was a significant anti-Brony/MLP sentiment in the fandom going on at the time as well), but I think too, the changing levels of what's accepted in society has changed dramatically since 2008-ish, that's a factor as well.

tl;dr: Some rotten apples ruined the barrel for people in regards to furries, but overall the anti-furry hysteria isn't nearly as bad as it used to be.

I blame SomethingAwful for most of the anti-furry sentiment throughout the 00s, and by extension 4chan. Those two sites exhibited a major influence on internet culture in their day, so it's only natural that most of the internet was pretty virulently anti-furry.

I still remember reading about SA's "Furry Concentration Camp." Classy bunch of people.

Which makes the daily post-release Zootopia threads on /co/ all the more hilarious to me, because there was a lot of collective hand-wringing in the lead up to the movie, because furries.

But you're pretty much on the money there. Those sites had a huge part in fanning the flames of those sentiments, but it's really not that big of a deal anymore in this day and age, I think. Not after some of the more... interesting stuff that's cropped up since fandoms as a whole migrated away from LiveJournal formats to more open places like Twitter and Tumblr. (Like otherkin becoming more and more prominent since those days, but that's all I'm going to say there)

I think once otherkin had someone to make fun of in Na'vi-kin the shame bubble burst.

Notice how 4chan changed its tune right around 2010, when they fixated on MLP:FiM. Hmmmm!

The CSI episode which was all about yiffing and fursuits probably didn't help.

That episode was hilarious. But you know I thought it also actually did a decent job. It did like to show the freak side of the furry fandom (as it does with a lot of groups, actually) but Grissom was honestly the best voice furries had in their own defense. But that's always been his character -- he's fascinated by human behavior and provides reasonable, rational defenses and explanations for things that other people choose to simply judge.

People who pretend to be animals and sometimes have sex while dressed as them. Who have had a new generation turn into (sometimes) otherkin and proclaim they are oppressed by the vanillas of the sex world (or compare themselves to transgender people).

I feel bad for the older furries who just want to wear their cat suit and rub up against someone dressed in a tiger suit.

Re: What is a furry?

It's funny, because during the more intense days of the furry fandom being the resident pariah (for lack of a better description) back between 2005-2009, the older furries just wanted to draw funny animals inspired by 90's Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons of the time, and not be compared to or put in the same category as the people who flaunted their sexual fetishes out in the open and whatnot. Even back then, I recall that otherkin were regarded as a small, but "fringe" subculture within the furry fandom, and nowhere near as prominent as it is today.

So interesting how times change in such a short amount of time.

A bunch of Syrian refugees got put up at a hotel where a furry con was being held. The kids loved it, and the fursuiters were more than happy to do what they could to help. That says a lot, to me.

Fans of anthropomorphic animals. People get pissy about them because "baaaawwwww bestiality" over all the porn.

Re: What is a furry?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It tends to go beyond "fans" though, doesn't it? I've always classified furry as someone who gets sexually aroused by anthropomorphic animals (or actually wants to be one).

Re: What is a furry?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Why?

That's like saying you're not a femmeslash fan unless you write f/f smut.

I've known lots of furries that don't do the sex thing. There's definitely a 'mainstream' furry culture, but not all furries fit into it, just like with every other group.

Re: What is a furry?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, because if it's just liking talking animals, then any fan of Disney movies in the entire history of their movies is automatically a furry, which isn't really ever how I've seen it used?

Re: What is a furry?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Every little kid who goes to Disney World and likes the costume characters is a furry, too!

Re: What is a furry?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No, that's not an apt comparison.

Liking one canon f/f ship doesn't mean you're "a femmeslash fan."
Liking one canon talking animal doesn't mean you're a furry.

Do you like femmeslash and f/f couples as a whole, across genres and canons? Then you can probably say you're a femmeslash fan.

Do you like the talking animal or humanoid animal genre as a whole, across genres and canons? Then you can probably say you're a furry fan.

Originally fans of anthropomorphic art across multiple publishers and genres. Erotica and yiffing optional.

I heard furries say they don't all like yiff
But then that means that I might be a furry

I say fans in the sense of Whovians, for example, because they're really the same thing. Not all Whovians are into the sexual part of their fandom, and neither is everyone who considers themselves a furry, those are just the ones we hear about the most because it's the biggest conversation piece.

A lot of the non-sexual stuff is really cute.

Someone who likes anthro people, usually a little more animal like than just straight up animu Cat Girl/Boy.

I honestly have no issues with them. Ever since getting super into WoW and now Wildstar, what with their animal like races (Draenei, Tauren, Worgen, Pandaren, Draken, Aurin (though they fit the cat girl/boy thing more)), and even getting into some pairings with said races (my main Warlock is an Orc who is with a Draenei Paladin and I have a Mage Pandaren with a Draenei Monk), I just can't get weird about furries anymore.

The ONLY thing about Furries I still hate though is the subset that uses the fursuits and shit as sex stuff. I dunno why that squicks me, but it does.

I was always kinda impressed by furries because they always had good costumes.

Until I saw a guy at ComiKaze who had a really crap furry costume.

(I've never gotten the whole people being upset about furries thing. Why is it my business if people want to yiff each other?)
